Awesome dumbshit conservative bumper sticker

continents fuck?

Obviously there must be at least two continents for fucking to occur. Otherwise you’d just have a continent masturbating.

Haven’t you ever noticed how well South America and Africa spoon?

I gotta say, although the sentiment itself is simplistic and ridiculous, the phrasing is not moronic.

You’re interpreting it as “The second Amendment [to the US Constitution] makes the other 9 possible.”

Another interpretation is “The second amendment [in the Bill of Rights] makes the other 9 possible.”

I see nothing, beyond the opportunity for mockery, to recommend the first interpretation. The fact that it makes sense recommends the second.

It’s always worthwhile to provide the most charitable possible reading to an opponent’s words; then, when you thrash them, the thrashing is more thorough.

That’s an editorial, and he offers no evidence that Republicans want to repeal the amendment. He only talks about those who want to modify the citizenship rule.

And there’s no evidence that DeGerolama is a Republican, either.

Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if you trolled the interwebs and found some obscure Republican somewhere who wanted to repeal the 14th, but it was clear from your subsequent post:

that you were talking about the efforts some have called for wrt the citizenship clause of the 14th amendment.

So, the fact is, you made the same kind of mistake that the OP was claiming the bumper sticker made. Maybe not the same degree, but the same kind.

Oh, I get it. When someone points out YOUR mistakes, they’re splitting hairs. But when someone points out a mistake made by your political adversaries, then that’s just fine and dandy.

If* I had a bumper sticker that said “Nick Jonas makes the other brothers possible,” would the more reasonable reading be that I was talking about the Jonas brothers, or all brothers?

  • that’s right, if.

As cited above.

To be a valid analogy, the bumper sticker would have to say “Nick Jonas makes the other brother [singular] possible.”

(hint: there are more than 10 amendements).

Not in the bill of rights there aren’t. In the world, there are well over a million.

The Cunstitution, the Bibuhl and the McDonalds’ full menu. The three reference writings for all Americans.

There are certainly degrees of pedantry. The fact that you now also want to slice into the hairs between Republican versus Tea Party member versus conservative libertarian suggests you are of a mastery of the matter way beyond my ability. I yield.

::mumble:: FIVE GOLDEN RINGS!!!

This is good, but it loses the critical juxtaposition of amendments, all around – you trade “amendments” for “rights” and thus lose the tight association offered by the original.

Here we also lose clarity; when I first read this I thought it meant, “The Second Amendment made it more possible to get nine others,” rather than, “The Second Amendment made it possible to get nine more.”

Both shorter, but both fail to reliably convey the sense the original does.

Not that I hold the original up as a model of clarity either… perhaps:

Second Amendment: making the Bill of Rights possible since 1789

Second Amendment: If we can’t shoot puppies, the terrorist have won!

Stop this. It’s quite possible that there are liberals out there who find the parsing of the other posters regarding the bumpersticker annoying and not cute as well as finding your nitpickery valueless as well. Frex, me. Stop making unfounded assumptions.

I inferred that the bumper sticker in question referred to the other nine as being the remainder of the Bill of Rights. I assume the writer of the sticker and the one using it are well aware that there are more than 10 amendments. So I’m willing to cut them some slack on the wording. As far as the sentiment goes, I think that if you believe that the Second Amendment protects any other rights you have then you are, by definition, a dumb fuck.

That’s pretty much what John’s posts are. A combination of nitpickery and false equivalence that would make a Fox News whore blush with shame.

-Joe

  1. John Mace is a very reasonable poster.
  2. Nothing makes a Fox News whore blush.

Do you seriously believe that if we were to run a poll asking people to choose between you and John Mace as to which is the more reasonable and even-handed poster that Mace would not win in a landslide?

how do we know the driver wasn’t just an epic troll?
