The poster child - or rather poster adult - for this is Jerry O’Connell, who was the chubby loser in Stand By Me and grew up to be an all-American male, square-jawed and handsome, in Sliders and other shows. (No links - on my phone).

Brian was supposed to be a geeky character, so costume, hair, and makeup were all designed to highlight that fact.
Nicholas Hoult was the boy who co-starred with Hugh Grant in About a Boy as a complete outcast/geek, who then went on to star as The Beast in X-Men: First Class (the one set in the 60’s) and is now dating The Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence. He has apparently been deemed better looking now.
