Funny thing is–though fashion magazines do have their bone-thin, covered in makeup, high fashion-wearing gals–every one I’ve worked at is basically run by Bettys: dowdy, middle-aged women with very little fashion sense who actually edit the magazine.
One difference I noted right off the bat. (And here I am outing myself as a Yo soy Betty, la Fea watcher!)
The photographer in the original is obviously, flamboyantly gay, and is generally not a bad guy – he was one of the most talented and artistic people in the company. The photographer in the ABC version is obviously straight, and is in an unholy alliance with Vanessa Williams’ character.
Speaking of this, did anyone else notice that Vanessa’s buzums seemed to be…out of wack in that scene? I missed the dialogue 'cus I was so weirded out by her boobage. Maybe it was just an odd camera angle.
Her in the sack? I think it was proof that light black women should use sunscreen, too. There seems to be some sun damage in her upper chest.
Well that, and they seemed to be going off in different directions or something.
Interesting ratings news:
Pretty impressive–here’s hoping that the numbers hold up (though I’d also like to see the Earl/Office hour get a boost).
Have her implants gone walkabout, you think?
I liked it. It’s a Cinderella story, of sorts, and I’m always up for those. I like Christine too, the one who makes her clothes out of the size 0 outfits.
Where have I seen Walter before? Has he done commercials?
I didn’t like it. I found it cliched, derivative of Devil Wears Prada (even though it’s probably a coincidence, since production probably started before the film was released), and the emotive music highly intrusive. I’m not sure what it’s trying to be . . . it seems divided between a tween Disney channel show and “Desperate Housewives.”
Mostly, though, I’m disappointed because I love Ferrarra. *RWHC * is a classic.
BTW, did any RWHC fans catch the allusions to the film in the first scene of Betty? Flan and the family watching the telenovela.
I’ll probably give it another try, though . . .
Something like that - they just seemed wrong.
I noticed them too. Do implants need to be redone as people age, and their skin starts to lose elasticity?
Was the character Fabia supposed to be a take off on Donatella Versace? That’s the first thing I thought of. Also, did anyone else think that Betty’s eyebrows were rather fake looking? Not only were they very thick but they were quite unkempt. No matter how bushy your eyebrows are, you can at least brush them into some kind of order.
Medstar, the eyebrows are indeed fake. Saw that on one of the entertainment shows. Glasses, bad wig, false eyebrows, and clip-on braces to “ugly” Betty up. Reminded me of Bette Davis in Now, Voyager, the eybrows. Bette’s were much worse though.
aNY ONE ELSE THINK fABIA LOOKS DEFORMED?
i THOUGHT MOST OF THE uGLY bETTY CAST LOOKED DEFORMED.
I caught the first ep. on Thursday. They got rid of some characters and retooled others. In the original Colombian show, the womanizing boss had a scheming fiancee who had it in for Betty since a friend of hers got passed over for Betty’s job. Plus there was a group of misfit secretaries who took Betty’s side against the fashion victims. The U. S. show was OK overall, except for the photo shoot scene. It was hard to watch her being humiliated like that.
I thought it had some potential, but it remained pretty much unfulfilled. I won’t be watching ep2.
I agree with the first part, but not with the second. It’s supposed to be cliche and the characters are supposed to be two-dimensional, but I want them to start playing around with that. So far, they’re playing it safe. But I like America Ferrara, so they’ll get another couple episodes before I give up on them.
I’m watching it right now on SoapNet. I didn’t think i’d like this show, but boy was I wrong. It has all the right touches of comedy, drama, soap opera melodrama, and warm fuzzy feelings.
America Fererra is muy talented and I am glad to have her on my TV every week. Vanessa (initial) Williams really surprised me with her Joan Collins like antics. I think this show will last if the writers continue to put forth quality stuff. I’m glad I gave it a chance.
Oh, and don’t be fooled by those braces and that greasy hair. Ms. Fererra is a very pretty girl.
Presumably the braces will come off at some point, and she could get contacts. So I fully expect the magazine-within-the-show to do a makeover article on her, probably sometime during the second season. And if they don’t do that, at least the friend who works in the magazine’s wardrobe department could advise her.
The reviewer in the New York Times suggested that she couldn’t possibly be clueless enough to wear that logoed sweatshirt thing on her first day on the job. She’s a college graduate who has been on job interviews and had some internships; she must have some clue.
