Ugly Betty -- just keeps getting better

Well, that’s what I think anyway.

I’m tickled pink that Amanda (the bitchy blonde) and Wilhelmina’s assistant (cute guy with curly hair) are warming to our Betty. I’m also tickled that Wilhelmina realizes it’s more important to get the magazine out than it is to make points by sabotaging Daniel.

Betty’s nephew at Mode, snarking on two-year-old Manolo Blaniks (?) – priceless.

I worry for Betty’s dad, but he can’t be deported, can he?

I don’t read fashion magazines, so I’m assuming the Post Apocalypse Christmas was a joke. That stuff was fugly, even for high fashion.

I’m glad to see Vincent Bianchi back (the photographer from Queens). He’s hot! He looked familiar, and IMDB says he was on Entourage, but I don’t remember the character.

I’m glad at least one new show I like will see an entire season. (Watch Kidnapped on Saturday, you guys!)

I’ve only been watching since the previous episode, but I’m loving what I’m seeing thus far. The “make-over” Betty underwent last week paired with Hips Don’t Lie was absolutely hilarious.

The only problem I have is that America Ferrera isn’t actually “ugly,” even in full Betty garb.

Compare the original Betty (Ana María Orozco) to Ferrera’s version.

See what I mean?

Oh well. I’ll be O.K. as long as they don’t decide to pull a Willow on us and make Betty hot. (i.e. dress provocatively, ditch the glasses/braces, etc.)

I think it’s to the actresses credit though, that I’m usually able to forget while I’m watching that she actually looks like this.

I missed the show last night, and my daughter forgot to Tivo it (no gruel for that kid this week! ). Does anyone know if it’s repeated during the week?

I don’t think so, but ABC always makes some announcement about seeing it online, so that may be an option.

I’m enjoying the show and Betty’s continued indoctrination to the perils and politics of the office environment, but I am a little concerned about two many subplots–the “murder” mystery is not compelling, and now the business with Betty’s father seems like something that’s going to be a continued distraction.

But Amanda & Marc (Wilhelmina’s assistant) are hilarious, Hilda is smokin’ hot, and the wonderful Ferrera holds it all together quite ably.

… check the ABC Family channel (I think that’s what it’s called?) if it’s part of your cable package. They replayed, at minimum, the first *Ugly Betty * on the subsequent Friday night … maybe they’re still replaying them and yesterday’s episode will be on tonight.

I just checked this online. The lineup seems to vary regionally depending on which cable carrier you use. Around here, Ugly Betty is not getting replayed anytime soon.

“Ugly Betty” is available online on ABC’s website. You can watch it by going here. Takes a little while to load, but the picture quality is quite good.

I just wanted to chime in for watching it on ABC’s site - picture quality is good and I didn’t experience any pause while watching (though that might have been because it was 2am). The only annoying thing was that the commercials were from The Grudge 2.

He was the guy that directed Queens Boulevard on Entourage. The indie film guy that was mean to E and called him “suit.”

I dig Ugly Betty. My roommate turned it on the first night and I’ve been tuning in ever since.

I love the moment between Marc and Justin: “Be yourself, dress however you want, and learn to run real fast.”

Also Wilhelmina’s “did you gesture at me when you said Kwaanza?!”

“Dead Anna Wintour” is not working for me, though. If she really wants to get back at these people, why not just go to the police and say, “He tried to kill me?”

That was a truly great line - speaks volumes!

I have chimed in on Ugly Betty threads and still think one of the best parts of this show is the use of color and the set designs…they are just great! There has to be an Emmy Award coming to this show, just for set design and costumes, if for no other reason.

The little clips of the Spanish language soap operas are also quite funny.

That was the character-defining moment for Marc. I don’t think he’s warming up to Betty, nor is Amanda, they’d both be fine with her vanishing forever. They had to ally with her this week to save themselves. Next week they’ll be back to their usual (was that Marc done up as Betty for Halloween?). But that moment with Justin showed that Marc wasn’t a cardboard cutout.

But oh my god, who casts Nicholas Gonzales and doesn’t make him take his shirt off?

I missed a moment of the ep, when Dad was on the phone with someone. Sounded like he was canceling an appointment?

After all of Betty’s phone calls, it was the HMO finally calling back to schedule an appointment, and the father didn’t want one and basically hung up.

The ep is repeating today on SoapNet at noon and midnight Eastern time.

You’re right: this is just getting better. Maybe I’m just liking the characters more, but I laughed at this episode. (Marc’s “learn to run real fast”; Dad’s “don’t be rude to guests” and a bunch more.)

Agreed. I think that it ought to get recognized.

Good point, about the use of color and set design, and lighting.

I don’t understand how they accomplish this, but it feels like I’m watching on a big screen. Is it because there’s no clutter? It works even when they’re at Betty’s house.
