Lately, I’ve either read threads where the post was longer than my monitor and I had to keep moving the little bar on the bottom to read what was on the far right of the page.
It’s also happened with a few e mails that I’ve gotten from people, even when I print it out, my printer will also cut out the far right side. DJ told me tonight, that my plans for getting a bigger monitor won’t help this problem.
I think I’d understand better if it happened all the time, but it doesn’t, sometimes it is regular for awhile, and THEN goes really wide. Is my computer going nuts? And why wouldn’t a bigger monitor help??
I don’t know why this happens in you e-mail (unless it is for the same reason as on the message board).
Normally the lines word wrap based upon the width of the window. If some one puts in more non-blank characters than will fit in a line, The window must scroll left-right to fit it. Usually it is a URL that causes the problem. You can make a link using vB code so that the URL does not show.
NOTE: This annoys the mods very much. Especially TubaDiva. Don’t even think of doing this in ATMB.
If you have a significantly larger monitor you may well be able to adjust your text size but as rar as printing goes differant thing altogether, you could try copy/pasting to a word processor and setting that up to suit your printer.
I found an example of what I was describing earlier. On the thread entitled “My complaint about Straight Dope MPSIMS” by Concrete, where the first page of the thread fit in the screen and printed out properly but on the second page, I was forced to scroll right to read it all and the page printed out with the far right part cropped out.
I’m not sure what size monitor I’m using but I’m reading on 800x600 resolution. My browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.
I have thought of the idea to copy from the email over to the Microsoft Word but I was hoping there was an easier way of fixing the problem rather than opening up a whole new application and then copy and paste.
So, anyone that can help me fix this problem wins a free heartfelt thank you

Hey, this has just started coming up when I have an e mail notification of someone having answered a thread that I posted, if I go check it out, why should NetAddress care?? Am I taking something from them when I go check out the answer?? I always come back, and if I have to shut down the browser there, I have to put my name and password in again, taking more steps than necessary.
Is this something that your e mail address system does?
Am I taking something from NetAddress when I go check out another site?
If, the above is a ‘no’, then why should they care? I realize I’m asking for your supposition on their intent, which would be an impossibility, just your best ‘computer guess’ is fine!
DrMatrix has the explanation for the scrolling left & right on this board. If there aren’t any spaces in a string of characters, the word wrap just goes till it gives up and wraps anyway. A long URL will do it or someone playing games and putting 100 straight "O"s or something. The mods have to go in and add a space every so often so that the word wrap works right.
If your resolution is 800x600, the word wrap will try to break at the edge of the screen. If you increase your resolution to 1024x768, you will get more characters before it tries to wrap. Sometimes that’s enough to stop the scrolling, sometimes not. If you have a bigger monitor, you can set the resolution higher and still have characters big enough to read. But that really isn’t the answer to the problem. Alert the mods, they can fix it or just realize that we are all seeing the same thing.
The email is probably a similar problem, if the email viewer doesn’t wrap the line, then the printer isn’t going to be able to print it. The printer only prints what the text looks like as an image. It doesn’t know how to word wrap, so if the email viewer doesn’t word wrap then the printer just goes as far as it can and cuts it off right there. There may be settings in your options for the email display for how many characters per line are allowed. Or, as someone said, highlight it, copy and paste it to notepad, then make it look the way you want before printing.
I might be able to guess what the Net@ddress problem is, but it’s difficult to explain. I think you should just open another browser window and load the SDMB in it when you get notified rather that close the browser itself. It’s not that you are taking anything away from them, just that it’s a security problem for one part of a screen to access an entirely different site. (That’s not very clear, but it’s the nature of the problem)
Thanks Jim, I’m a little shaky on the NetAddress not wanting me to leave to read the notification that I’ve received, but, I figure they must have some reason, even if it isn’t clear. So, I’ll just keep a notepad handy, for writing down which place I need to go, that should handle that problem.
And, you and Dr.Matrix, really saved me a few hundred dollars, since I was ready to scrap a perfectly sound 13 inch monitor for one of the snazzy looking new 15-17 inch ones! I appreciate your help, and everyone’s quick answers. It’s nice being here!
Another tip: if you’re using IE and have a wheel-mouse, you can instantaneously adjust the font size by holding down “Ctrl” and scrolling the wheel. Try it, it’s fun!
Incidentally, I also felt that small monitors were “perfectly good.” Then I got a nineteen and a dual-head Matrox graphics card. My “perfectly good” smaller monitor now displays all the crap I never look at, and I’ll never go back to a small monitor.
