So what ever happened to being satisfied with a B+ as a test/essay/project grade? Well, I aim to find out.
What prompted this thread? Simple…a group video project on the Catcher in the Rye. My group got a B+ last week. One of our members flipped out over said grade- granted, he’s a bit of a perfectionist, but still…
Plus, Jester got upset when I graded his conversation with a strange girl a B+. And hell- even i’ve been a little disapointed over a B+ grade. In a class I care about anyway.
So what gives? Are we just being too harsh? Is it a good grade? A bad grade? Does it depend on the circumstances?
I want to find out! I will clear the B+'s name, I swear to god! (Oh, but not the B. Sorry, I am a bit of a snob, but I’d never take a case defending a B.)
As a teacher I had more trouble from B+ students than everyone else put together. I think it’s the frustration of being so close to an A. That and rampant grade inflation.
But I go to an IB school, and i’m in the IB program. And we are hostile when it comes to getting B’s. A few students who are used to making C’s, are excited to make B’s. But students used to making A’s don’t like to step down. Heck, we get upset when out GPA goes below a 4.0 Weighted. I think it’s just a lot of students being way too hard on themselves. I can handle a B… But I always try really hard for an A. Which is why, I sometimes get really upset over getting a B, because I’ve tried really hard. Or, it’s a class that I thought I would get an A in. That’s my $.02
A B+ is precious points from an A-, and it’s worth a third of a grade point less (I think). Now don’t get me wrong; I’d love to get B+s in some of my classes (psych, my incredibly annoying english class), but in others it’s almost an insult . . . “Yeah . . . you just missed an A- by THIS || much. Tough break.” GRRR.
