I’m the same way. Babies do nothing for me… but show me a puppy and I nearly begin lactating.
Post partum nurse Cyn chiming in.
Female.
I see between 12 and 24 newborn babies a week and they are certainly not all cute. The 1 pound 10 ouncer I saw yesterday was far far far from cute. The 9 pound 14 ouncer looked like Jabba the Hut. The rule-out-Down’s baby was not cute and the other 4 were not any cuter. Most newborns are rashy or swollen or have big caputs on their heads. Even the textbook-picture-perfect ones are not real cute. Very few display personality or interaction, although I disagree about the smell. A clean newborn is wonderful. I find newborns fascinating but not cute.
Male here. I think they’re cute. But my oldest was so beautiful when she was born that the nurses in the hospital always moved her crib to the front of the nursery, right by the window, even when none of our relatives were coming.
My husband came up with this theory, too–he says it’s so they don’t get drop-kicked.
Our little one is three months old now, and we often have people stopping to tell us how cute she is. In fact the other day a complete stranger said, “She is so f#$%ing cute!” (My response was something like, “Uhhhh… thanks!”)
That is one exceedingly cute baby!
Congratulations to you!
Well, I find the positively scrumptious. I think they’re cute and quite funny. Did anyone see last night’s America’s Funniest Home Videos? There was this little baby eating an ice cream cone. Well, you just had to see it. it was adorable.
Lovin’ dem babies.
Another one in the “not cute at all” camp.
They are strange little aliens. And often noisy.
When younger, I never failed to be infuriated by the horrible assumption that I would somehow “change my mind when I got older”. Very condescending. I’d hazard a guess that a lot of the Non-baby SDMB women hazd to suffer the same nonsn ese from their mother too.
Now puppies, and dogs, on the other hand
That’s because babies are cute.
Another childless chick checking in. I actually do like other people’s babies. I’m one of the ones who cuddles and coos over other people’s babies. However, I have absolutely no desire to have one of my own. They’re cute and cuddly for about 5 minutes. As long as I spend that 5 minutes with some baby or other once a year or so all of my maternal instinct is fulfilled and I’m happy. And as soon as they start to scream or smell, I’m even happier about the fact that they’re someone else’s problem. Plus, I can’t stand older kids. As soon as they start talking, until they reach about high school, I don’t want ANYTHING to do with them. I have no sense of how to deal with kids. I didn’t when I was one - I always wanted to sit at the adults’ table - and I still don’t.
I feel the same way about kittens and puppies as I do about babies. They’re cute and I’ll cuddle one for a few minutes but they I can walk away and happily go home to my two adult cats with no regrets.
