My wife was in our backyard with the dogs, when the little dog started barking, and then came running out of the bushes. He’s usually pretty fearless (he chased a coyote many times his size out of the yard one time), so it must have been something really scary!
It’s been very hot here, and the young hawks come out of their nests in search of water. We put a bowl of water down for him, but he decided to just soak in it. We had a wildlife rescue guy come and take him to rehab.
One of the rescue people said that when it gets hot like this, the young birds are forced to “jump ship” in order to find water. The parents generally watch over them, but there’s no way that the baby is getting back into the nest. The rescue guy said they pair them with adults, and when they are old enough to eat on their own, they release them back near where they found them.
I met an adult Harris hawk this weekend at a seminar. Really neat birds, and I’m glad there was someone available to help the little one out. I’ve been reading about how hot it is out where you are. Holy crap.
Harris hawks are used in falconry, very good birds as they naturally hunt as a team. I believe they use them for about 4 years and then release them back to the wild. I don’t know all that much about it.
