Celebrity sea hawk critical despite heroic Bay rescue

A young osprey made famous by a nest webcam was rescued from San Francisco Bay Wednesday after she made a dive too far in learning to fish.

Online viewers who watched two ospreys hatch and mature online were wistful and a little sad July 4 when Whirley was the first to set out on her own and fly away from the nest without returning.

But the bird found that independence can be tough even with the genes of an ancient raptor species known for miraculous agility and skill in flying and skimming over water to grab fish.

Fortunately our osprey chick (nest in my work parking lot) is doing great, been flying for a week+ now. The kids will decide his or her name today too.
