Baby Name Thread - Which Long Form of Elly?

Elisheba or Elisheva.

Have to agree with those that say the H looks bad.

Eliahna would end up being known as ‘Eliahna with an h.’ Eliana’s pretty, though.

One of my nieces has a baby called Eloise, so I vote for that. There are tons of Ellies of various kinds over here.

Neither, sorry. Eloise sounds like a retiree, and I don’t have a clue what Eliahna is supposed to sound like aloud.

I’m also due in April. I vote Eliana without the h. I think the h simply confuses the eye too much.

FYI, I like Eleanor but my husband has vetoed it as too old fashioned.

I have always liked the song Dear Eloise, so I vote for Eloise.

If I must choose between those two, Eloise no doubt. It’s old-fashioned, but at least it’s a real name. The “yoonikque” spelling of the other one is just atrocious.

I’d rather vote for Eleanor.

I’m with the majority here. Eloise is my choice.

Eliahna (prn. elly-ana) happens to be the name of the toon I play on World of Warcraft - I had to stick the “h” in there to get the name because every other variation I tried was already used and it was starting to tax my creativity. I think it makes a good name for a night elf, and everyone in the guild just calls me Elly. My partner has really warmed up to the name while we’ve been playing to the point that he wants to use it if we have a daughter which, frankly, horrifies me. The name just feels too overdone for an actual human to have to live with, and the bastardized spelling pains the eye (I’d have gone with the simplest version, Eliana, if I had to settle for it). Besides, it’s mine! I use it on places other than WoW now and I want to keep it as my internet identity.

I’m sure I’ve talked him around already but I knew you guys would (mostly) back me up.

I only voted Eliahna because one of my cats is named Eliana and I call her Elly.

This exactly.

Elaine, Elise, Helen?

Another for Eleanor (the name I thought would be in consideration when I saw the thread title), and I like Elisa and Elise as well. (I happen to be a fan of a Prince protege named Elisa Fiorillo, so ‘Elisa’ is actually my top pick.) The suggestion of Elisheva is really pretty, too. Ellen, too, and Eliana. Elizabeth is also good, but risks “Liz” or “Beth” being applied later.

If I had to pick only from the two poll options, I’d choose Eloise. I really dislike the look of Eliahna–it looks like parents desperate for a “unique” name that just happens to be pronounced like a more normal name. I do understand the spelling; without the “h” it’s probable that lots of people will mispronounce the name with an “anna” sound. I do like the sound of “Eliana” with the “ah” sound, though.

Just don’t give her a middle name that will cause her to be called “Ellie May.”

Another vote for the non-existent Eleanor.

I would go Eloise over the other though again because of the strange spelling. (It reminds me of piranha.)

Ellison.

I voted Eloise but I am partial to the name Elora

Yes, sorry, I would have voted for Eliana, because as a name I like it better. But with the weird spelling it made me go for Elouise.

Eliahna is way too close to Epponnee Ray.

Ellen. Nobody’s named Ellen anymore.

Elenore or Eleanore

ymmv

Another “I prefer the sound of Elliana but not the spelling you proposed” vote.

Are you planning for the girl to be living at the Plaza by the time she’s six?

Elspeth.
