baby names

well, i have months to figure out a name (don’t even know if it’s a boy or a girl, yet), but i found one i really like: lorelei (“lora-lie”). i was thinking lorelei marie potter.

if it’s a boy, the middle name is going to be leroy (family tradition), and the last name is potter. we like “interesting” names; my step-kids are aryanna and aoghdan. any suggestions (for girl or boy)?

I like Lorelei -another one similar I thought was pretty is Leilani. Goes good with Marie, too.

Oh, and by the way…Congrats!

Layla is also pretty. But if you do have a boy, PLEASE DO NOT name him Harold or Harry.

How about:

Imalil T.
::ducks and runs::

thanks!

how is leilani pronounced? “lay-lani?”

ech, no, i don’t like harold or harry. oh! i get it, harry potter! eeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww!

i like henry david, but that precludes having leroy as the middle name, oh well.

oh, should this have been in imho? i just realized that it’s kind of poll-ish.

You’ve got the pronunciation right on Leilani: ‘lei’ is just like that nice Hawai’ian flower necklace you can get.

Please, please try to avoid giving your kid names so that the initials spell out something. LMP looks like it’d work though.

Break the standard three-name mold: give your kid two middle names! (Like my family does.) More for your child to choose from as an alternative name (or nickname) should they turn out to not like what you named them.

Just be forwarned that many computer systems don’t handle more than one middle initial. Or long names either. (Mine is 32 characters long, not including 3 spaces. I’ve only seen one state so far with their ID card/Driver’s License system set up so that it could handle my long name.)

Once I get home, I’ll toss up the URL for a really good name site: I use it when I get stuck trying to think up names for my on-line RP characters.

<< Wheeeeeeeeeeee!>>

i dunno about two middle names. to be honest, i don’t even see why a kid needs one middle name. certainly not so that he can insist i call him something other than what i named him. i’m the mommy, i get to choose what he’s called. daddy’s lucky i let him have a say, much less the baby.

actually, my brother has two. he was born robert carr dykstra (carr is my dad’s adoptive parent’s last name, so they thought it’d be a nice middle name). then they found out that there was no saint robert, so his baptismal certificate reads robert christopher carr dykstra. we tease him and call him robert bobby christopher carr candela (mom’s maiden) dykstra. (well, now that i’ve given out all of my last names, might as well add my address, heh? )

don’t worry, i’m not out for cutsey, look-what-i-can-spell-with-your-initials stuff. i was born m.e.d., and thought that was bad enough.

as for sites, i really like babynames.com so far. i like it cause i can click to add names to my favourites, and also type in names that they don’t have. it’s cool.

:giggles: Good one.

Congrats, angel.

Dare I recommend this site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/3450/

But if you decide to use one of these names, don’t tell your kid who sent the link!

Nonny “wants to live” Mouse

Years ago while a group of us were in the office I worked in, I asked a friend of mine (whose name is Robert White - really - I mean how mundane can a name be?) what he planned to name his first child… He looked at me for a moment and replied, “We haven’t thought about any girl names, but if it’s a boy, we’ll call him Justin… Justin Other… Yeah, that’s it! Justin Other White!”

We didn’t see his humor until it was too late… Thus satisfied that he was as insane as ever, we didn’t ask again…

Here’s a pretty cool baby site that I’ve used. The mailing list is helpful and they send you a weekly update with what should be happening with your baby at that age. A link to the name page http://www.babycenter.com/babyname/

For boys names I like Porter but my wife hates it. Leilani is nice and I’ve known two I think. I also like Audrey, Jacqueline and Aileen for the girls…

Here we go…

Breaks it down by geographic area first, then gets into more specific geographic areas, then lists the names and their meanings. Good for if you want to look for a name that’s from a specific area, not so good if you just want a master list of names.
Good to hear you’re keeping an eye out for name combonations that could lead to… embarassing initials.

Congratulations! And let me be the first to annoyingly rub your tummy without asking permission first!

I’m happy with the names we chose for my last two:
Tanner Fox (Yes, I am an X-Files fan)
Olivia Sage (We call her Sage)

Although I also call Tanner “Tanner Tyler Tucker Todd” just for kicks.

My neice’s name is Scout. Darn it, because I would’ve snatched that name up in a heartbeat. But I’m very happy with “Sage” too…different enough but not too out there.

Speaking of out there–my first choice for a girl was “Echo.” To which my mother would always respond with something like, “Elizabeth is nice, how about Elizabeth? Or Emily, maybe?”

Best wishes!

My daughter started preschool last week. All the kids had nametags on. Saw a little girl, cute as a button, with a nametag that said “Lexus.”

Please don’t name your child that. Please.

Beck for a boy. Beck for a girl. BECK RULES!

I have no specific problem with “Porter”, except you’ve suggested it to someone named Potter.

Porter Potter.

Not only do I dislike the sound of those names in combination, but it sounds a lot like Porta-Potty, which is what we call those portable toilets that they use on construction sites.

Congratulations, Abuse Angel!

Names… I love the boy’s name Riley… can’t define why, I just love it! Ideally, I’d name my son Riley Thomas B______, but I’m having a hard time convincing Mr Cazzle that this is a good idea (not that we need baby names just now). I was going to suggest Riley Gerald because that’s his grandfather’s name and might help reconcile Mr Cazzle to the idea. I’m not keen on Gerald, but Mr Cazzle likes it. Other family names we’re considering are Graeme, Douglas and Donald.

Girls names - I love Alanna. I pronounce it ah-lah-nah, not al-lan-nah. I also like Alyssa, however you choose to spell it, and Maegan (May-gan, rather than Mee-gan). I have a cousin called Elliana, and I think that’s a most beautiful name.

I dislike aliteration in names. SO’s cousin had a baby recently named Cooper Charlie Corbett. Yech. Not my taste. I personally love the name Isobel, but crossed it off my list because I think the “B” sound is too hard to repeat in a name - my future married name sounds like Beckham. Isobel Beckham doesn’t sound right to me. Mr Cazzle commented that Rebecca is a nice name (it is), but I pointed out that Rebecca (Becky) Beckham sounds awful. I also don’t like initials that spell something. All in all, I’m going to be walking a naming tightrope!! Something to honour an ancestor, something without a B in it, something fairly conventional to please Mr Cazzle, something that doesn’t spell out anything in the initials, something old, something new, something borrowed… oh, wait. Where was I?

Just a suggestion - the Unusual and Creative Names Page. It may be helpful, or it may just be good for a laugh. Let me tell you, it takes all kinds! Some of the names suggested on that site are downright horrifying!! Others are cool.

I knew of a girl named Lorelei, and I always thought it a pretty name.

Just a final note - Harry Potter’s parents in the book are Lily and James Potter. He has no siblings, so these are the only other names you need to worry about if you want to steer clear of JK Rowlings characters

For a girl how about Anashey? Pronounced Anna shay.
And congratualtions.

For a boy, I like William. The only thing is, he might get called “Bill” or “Billy”. I don’t know about you but I don’t really care for that part. Also Lane’s a good name. Whatever you do, if you have a girl, don’t name her Heather. There are already way too many.(I know. I am one.)

Oh, oh, how about annonamous, he’ll get credit for everything.

Ok, my aunt’s name is Lorilee. Eeeeeeverybody always called her “Lora-lee”. That’s just how it’s spelled! But, her mom (my grandma) had always wanted it pronounced “Laural-ee”. (What can I say, insanity runs in the family!) For years and years she would rag on her sons to call her by the right name. Never worked. SO! If you’re gonna name her something, make sure the letters match up with the sounds. Saves a lot of trouble in the long run.
