"Back to Basics" naming trend lately

The cool thing these days seems to be to take something really old, make a modern version of it, and name it as Spartanly as possible: stripped of all numbers, subtitles, or modifications to the original title. Recent examples are the latest Star Trek movie, simply titled Star Trek, and the new Wolfenstein game coming out which will be named “Wolfenstein”.

What other franchises have done this?

Fast & Furious is the fourth film in the film series The Fast and the Furious. The Final Destination is the fourth film in the Final Destination series.

Last year, when they released the sixth or seventh iteration of the Prince of Persia games, they just called it Prince of Persia.

Halloween, directed by Rob Zombie.

I think a key part of this is reboots. But I could be wrong.

Rambo, the fourth one was called Rambo.

There was also “Rocky Balboa.”

Is this anything like bands/musicians who, well into their career, release a self-titled album? How unimaginitively lame.

I’m sure there’s a debut album out there somewhere called “Greatest Hits” to balance that out.

Since the first Halo game had the unimaginative subtitle “Combat Evolved” tacked on by Microsoft, this creates the perfect opportunity for them to jump the bandwagon and release the White Album of the Xbox 360: “halo.” No numbers, no subtitles, not even a capital letter to be found!
