Backing up PS2 Games

Can I back up my PS2 games onto normal cds using my computer? Will the backups run normally or is there some encryption device that prevents me from doing this? Are PS2 cds normal cds or more like DVDs?

I would try it out, but I’m at work, and this just struck me just now

Thanks.

You can make backup copies, but you’ll need a modified PS2 to play them.

The PS2 games that are blue on the bottom are CDs. The ones that are silver on the bottom are DVDs. Obviously you won’t be able to copy a DVD game onto a CD.

By the way, this isn’t really the best place to get information on backing up games. The SDMB moderators tend to frown on that sort of discussion, even when the backups you’re making are perfectly legal.

Oops, sorry. Didn’t realise it was frowned upon.

What do you mean by modified PS2? Modified illegally or one you can buy? I don’t know much about PS2s, I bought my fiance one for father’s day.

And I promise that’s the end of the discussion

We don’t allow this kind of discussion because this sort of information can be used to defeat copyrights.

I mean a PS2 that has had a “mod chip” installed. I don’t know if anyone in the US actually sells pre-modded PS2s, but it is possible to buy the chip and install it yourself.

Whether it’s legal to do so is a question that’s been brought up here before, and I don’t think there has been a definitive answer. If the PS2’s copy protection measures are something that “effectively controls access to a work”, then circumventing them is illegal under the DMCA.
