Bad circadian rhythm and sleep schedule, how do I fix it?

My body really thinks it should be going to bed around 6-7 AM and waking around 4-5 PM. Which would mean I not only have hypersomnia, but also a really f’ed up circadian rhythm.

I continually try to get on a more accepted sleep schedule, and for a couple days I can sleep 10 PM - 7 AM (always with strong and disturbing nightmares when I do) then my body rejects it and goes right back to its old ways. For the sake of my classes at law school, I can usually push it and get to bed by 3 AM, sleep half a dozen hours and wake for mid-morning class, then nap a few hours through dinner time to make up the difference. But I’m sure that isn’t “normal” either.

Am I supposed to be tired all the time and have these bizarro sleep schedules, or is there something I can do to fix it??

Talk to a doctor about this, and don’t accept a brush off or a quick scrip for ambien. Meanwhile, Sleepnet is an excellent site for learning about sleep disorders.
