Provo UT isn’t far from Salt Lake City. Al Capone reportedly wanted to expand operations to Provo but gave up because the place was too crooked. Sure, that was then, this is now. I’ll nominate Stockton CA for sleazy attention these days.
Didn’t “60 Minutes” do a show about this? IIRC, the clients also had to not just look for, but actually GET and KEEP a job unless they were totally disabled, and stay away from alcohol and illegal drugs. This story included at least one person who preferred living on the streets to following their rules.
An organization in my town is in the early stages of planning a “tiny house community” for the chronically homeless, also with some very tight rules. I’ll believe it when I see it. :dubious:
In my area, when the weather gets very cold, or very hot for that matter, some of the shelters that make their clients leave during the day convert to 24 hours, although one in particular are upfront that they cannot guarantee that they will be able to feed them, probably because they do not have a commercial kitchen and must rely on donated food that doesn’t require one for large-volume preparation.
Anywhere near Tull?
I realize that “extra” LDS boys (including my own grandfather) were deliberately made homeless decades ago, because of polygamy. Is this still part of the culture?
That’s exactly the reason why. Apparently they tend to hitchhike to the SLC region, or Phoenix in cold weather, and usually work in construction.
I have also heard that some families have taken these boys into their homes, whether through the foster care system or some other means, and the boys said they didn’t know that families really lived the way these people did. They had adequate food and clothing (not always the case with FLDS households) and were shocked that both boys and girls could go to school for as long as they wanted, and that in the non-FLDS world, people choose their spouses and can have as many or as few children as they wanted.
There will be water if God wills it.
