As I suspected… the old guy warbling “the power to turn back time” on the commercial for Direct TV is none other than John Bongiovi (his real name).
My issue: he sounds terrible. Has the studio and Sambora vocals been carrying him all these years?

I’m not familiar with the commercial but you should keep two things in mind. That song came out 30 year ago and he was 24 then (he’s in his 50’s now).
What do you expect?
Furthermore, he was really screaming in that song, he wasn’t exactly pacing himself. For example, take a ballad or a Neil Young song from the 70’s and 30 (or 40 or 50) years later and they can still do it, generally. But Jon wasn’t holding back in that one so now when he’s 50 something and his vocal chords are tired and starting to wear out and he can’t push himself as far as he could when he was in his 20’s. It’s pretty common.
I think he still sounds and looks pretty good. You want to talk about singers who have not aged well, let us review Eddie Money shilling for Geiko. Now that’s unfortunate.
The commercial the OP’s about.
Yeah, it’s cheesy, but that’s on purpose. No biggie.
I missed that one when it came out and yeah, pretty awful. So awful I can’t stop laughing.
All due respect: get yer ears checked; there’s no modulation at all in his voice… he sings with all the quality of Barney Fife in his choir.
