Does it bother you more to see someone driving very badly in a vehicle with government plates than regular plates?
The other day as I was driving home, a car with “State Fire Marshal” plastered across the side pulled a stupid driving maneuver. I found myself more irritated at that driver than I would normally be. Apparently, I expect a fire marshal not to drive like an idiot.
Do you find that you have different standards/expectations for certain vehicles?
I know I do. I run 5 trucks on the road at all times with our name and phone number on three sides of the vehicle. I regularly field calls about poor driving . Some I get the feeling are just whining but I treat them all with the same concern. I encourage my drivers to above and beyond the call of duty, letting people in , waiting for people to turn out things of that nature. With the company name on the vehicles it can only help as far as I’m concerned. Be sure when someone is rude to me in a company vehicle I have no qualms about calling in about it. If my drivers are being rude I need to know.
It makes me nuts. I haven’t, however, made a phone call about it - I really don’t want to get someone in trouble and nothing truly egregious has happened yet in any of these instances.
I reported some guy once, for tailgating like a maniac, speeding, and passing me in a no-passing zone on a two lane road where passing was clearly unsafe. He had a teenager in the car with him. I’m not sure if that was one of those family outing things, or if his job involved transporting the kid (could happen). I hope he had an upleasant day with the boss.
I also must confess to some trials and tribulations when I had to take a state vehicle to a large and unfamiliar city. I was driving at night in an area with a whole lot of road construction and I swear I wound up off-road at one point. I’m glad no one saw that one!
