Bad news for Firefly fans

SciFi rejected the series, which follows UPN’s earlier decision not to take it (see www.fireflysupport.com for details). This makes things look pretty bleak, and it’s pretty clear that Serenity isn’t going to be flying again anytime soon.

Darnit.
:frowning:

Guess Joss shouldn’t have fucked with his fans so royally. After the end of S6, millions of people decided they didn’t want to give ME the chance to hurt them again.

Bad news for Firefly fans?

Firefly fans have never, ever had anything but bad news.

They were getting bad news at the ‘premeire’ of the ‘first’ episode.

It’s the Doomed Fandom of Death.

That’s a shame…it was a very intelligent, entertaining show.

What happened at the end of the 6th season (of Buffy, I’m assuming)?

Bad news for Firefly fans?

Firefly has never, ever had any fans. :stuck_out_tongue:

(No, sir, I don’t like it.)

I’d given up hope for Firefly after seeing ads for some show on SciFi starring Adam Baldwin (Jayne). After all, can an actor be in two series at once?

A major character died. ~shrugs~ A lot of fans take it very, very personally. I think it’s somewhat silly myself, but then I think Elvis was an schizophrenic vampire from outer space

A major charachter dies? Warren? What are you talking about?

Buffy Spoilers for the end of season 6 below!

Tara is shot by Warren. Then Willow rips Warren’s skin off, killing him.!! After many more hijinks the gang makes up in the end! Obviously Pepperland Girl didn’t like it, but I don’t see how that would go into fans hating Firefly.

I wondered if I needed to use a spoiler box. Nah

Tara. Remember Willow’s lover? Wiccan, blonde? Was struck by bullet and died in Willow’s arms?

I think she would be the major character Fiat was referring to.

IMHO
Punishing an author for killing a character always reminds me of Misery. If a writer kills, maims, or screws up a character for no real reason(Apu having an affair for example) then, I can understand some backlash. But Sunnydale is a dangerous place. Being the Slayer’s friend is especially risky.

I don’t think it was the ending itself that ostracized some fans, it was the whole of S6. The ending was just icing on the cake.

erl, who doesn’t take with that sort of thing and liked S6

So, the fact YOU didn’t like it means no one did?
My, how solipsistic.

Actually, that’s not why people tuned out. Sure the Kittens will never be back, but they lost a lot more than the W/T fans due to the following:
The beating in Dead Things.
The eggs in As You Were. (and Riley).
Xander’s speech in Entropy.
The poorly planned and even more worse executed “bad boyfriend arc.”
The whiplash between Dead Things and Older and Far Away.
MN admitted that they hd no idea what they were going to do after Dead Things with Buffy and Spike.
The attempted rape in Seeing Red.
The “plot twist” from getting the chip removed ot getting the soul. There are still people who think Spike wasn’t after a soul, even htough it’s canon that he purposely sought the soul.
The fact that Spike was only allowed 5 mins in the entire 2 hour finale.
The fact that Spike’s soul means nothing to everybody (except maybe Buffy.)
The lack of internal consistency throughout the sixth season. Most couldn’t tell from one episode to the next what the fuck was going on with Buffy. And her tired “it’s real to you,” speeches got on a lot of people’s last nerve.
Buffy’s attitude of “Fuck 'em and beat 'em, it’s ok. I’m still a good person.” She shared many characteristics with domestic abusers, but was never once called on it by anybody.
And though I said it once before, I’ll repeat it. Marti Noxon.

There are more Spike fans out there than some people realize, and they feel like they’ve been shit on, constantly, since around Wrecked (6.10). Every single Spike fan or B/S shipper I have seen on the Internet (and that’s quite a few) pretty much said, “I’m not going to let Joss hurt me again.”
THey pissed off two huge fan bases last year, and the B/A shippers hate them too. The Anya fans weren’t happy. They lost a lot of Xander fans due to the whole Hell’s Bells thing. (The only people who weren’t upset after last year was the diehard Xander fans.) Note: I’m not talking casual fans. I’m talking crazy online fans. That’s the 3 biggest fan bases online. When you make that many peope angry, you’re going to pay. They won’t watch, they’ll tell their friends not to watch, etc etc.
For some reason JW doesn’t understand this…maybe he will now. At the end of S5, Firefly would have had a huge fanbase already built it, because everybody loved S5. But by the end of S6, that huge built-in fanbase was gone.

You might ought to do a search for threads about Firefly before dismissing it out of hand.

Firefly indeed had fans, and those fans were given the shaft from day one.

It was a good show. Handled poorly.

Are there, um, any B/R shippers?

No. The one thing that links all fans, no matter who they are or who they ship, is their hate for Riley.

Let me edit my statement to one that is both less amusing and less of a mirror of Fisher Queen’s post but is more factually correct and perhaps more disheartening for Firefly boosters.

Bad news for Firefly fans?

Firefly had not enough fans to remain profitable despite being a sci fi show broadcast on FRIDAY NIGHT on the FOX NETWORK!!. I admit, it must have been difficult to compete with the ratings juggernaut that is Fastlane; or measure up to the prior success of Millenium and Sliders.
