Bad restaurant or indication of the American education? you be the judge.

So I go into a restaurant for lunch today. Nice, sit down type fast food that only has restaurants in this Kansas City. When I asked the waitress if they take American Express, she paused for a split second before asking “That’s a credit card, right?” I nodded.

It’s ok. She was overworked. I could tell because well over half the tables in the dining area hadn’t been bused and she seemed to be running around like crazy. Assuming I didn’t notice the lack of a busboy, though, it would be really hard not to notice the sign out front.

In nice green type it said “Looking for kind, fast, efficient workers in a friendly environment.” So far, so good. There were, however, two hand written notes attached to the sign. These were in a red permanent marker, I believe, and with penmenship worse than mine (and believe me, mine sucks). The top left hand one said “Servers nite.”
The bottom right hand one said “Drive thur weekdays.”

I’m willing to overlook the first one, much as it grates on my sense of spelling. But are you trying to tell me that you can’t even spell the bastardized version of “through?” Maybe they really are looking for drivers who can only work on Thursdays. Maybe they’re purposely trying to weed out good spellers. Maybe I’m just making too big a deal over nothing.

Sounds forgivably dyslexic to me.

see - they dont want no overqualified people… they d give up the job for something better in no time.

But hey! I am the girl who made up the all new language of Austrian-English! Everything goes.

I donut like bad spelling.

dodgy

You asked if they take American Express at a restaurant that has ** a drive through**???

Yeah. First off, it was the only form of payment I had on me, short of the $2 bill in my wallet. Secondly, this was a different kind of restaurant. It’s fast food in that you get your food within five minutes and they have a drive thru (yes, I’m spelling it the bastardized way in this instance because it’s the accpeted spelling, however normally I hate the word thru). But it’s a sit down restuarant, there are waitresses, and you normally linger over your meal. The best of both worlds.

BTW, they do take American Express.
Anyway, I think I’m most upset with the management over the sign. No, they can’t be faulted exactly for the lack of help. It’s not their fault if people quit. However, how they go about hiring someone new, how they present their restaurant to the potential employee, is entirely their responsibility. If that sign has been up for longer than this business day, I’m ashamed for whoever is running the place.

There was a local theatre that had made a help wanted sign with the movable letter that the theatre used to make the signs for the auditoriums.

The sign originally said

Help wanted
See Management

The staff changed it to

Mangement wanted
See Help

This was on display on a busy weekend night.
I later ended up working there. (Under new management)

Whoah! Ender! What restaurant? You live in Kansas City? Shit. Wanna go out for a beer?

Homer,

I don’t want to disparage the entire chain over the sins of one restaurant, even if it’s one no one outside KC has probably heard of before. Besides, it shouldn’t be that difficult to determine from the clues I’ve given.

Beer sounds good. E-mail me.
