Bad Stuff about Pepperlandgirl and SDMB

I first read her stuff when she responded to my “You Kill, You Die” thread in Great Debates. She was on the opposite side of the debate and I found her arguments to be obtuse, meaningless, containing unnecessary personal asides and just plain wrong! wrong! wrong! WRONG!

Can you beleive that she had the nerve to say the same thing about my arguments? I mean really! We all know that not only am I infallible, I am also the soul of courtesy, and posess a Grandmasters degree in Masturbat… …er Master debating. Who is she to find fault with my arguments?

So I unleashed the full force of my unfettered debating technique (as a Grandmaster I ususally hold back so as not to injure my opponents or finish them off too quickly.)

I couldn’t believe that she came back and argued point for point (flawed and pathetic as those arguments were I admired the spirit, and her ability to withstanding the searing light of my perfect logic.)

Not only that, but she had the nerve to imply that I was being arrogant and stubborn. Can you imagine such a thing?

At any rate, I thoroughly enjoyed that discussion as much as any I had on the board. I also probably learned more there than on any discussion I’d had previously. Enough that I’ve radically modified my opinions (Though of course I didn’t admit that at the time, not that I’m stubborn or anything. Nope not me.)

Anyway, we don’t cross paths again for a couple of weeks, and then she responds in the “PETA CHICK” thread in the pit, strongly agreeing with me, and backing up my arguments in a complimentary fashion.

So, I’ve had occasion to read her post in several other threads. Sometimes we’re on the same side of the fence, sometimes not.
Which brings me to my point.

I think the best quality of the SDMB and the people in it is their overwhelming sense of fairness. Rarely have I seen a grudge held in serious discussion. You may be bitter enemies with somebody in one thread, only to find yourself as brothers-in-arms, stomping on some ignorant fool in another (and of course that ignorant fool might be your best friend in a third thread.)

What a great feeling!

The trolls just don’t get it, do they? They take an attack against an argument as a personal attack. THey respond viciously and unprovoked in other threads as if this somehow vindicates their cause, and resort to puppetry. They don’t realize that nobody cares about yesterday’s argument anymore. They take fun out of childish taunts, and miss out on the best part of this board.

It’s when a worthy adversary agrees with you.

I don’t hold any grudges. Well, except maybe for that Wally and his damned gerbil crusade! Screw it, I’m takin’ it to the pit!

Wow, Scylla I am so honored. I thought the first thread that actually had my name in the title would be in The Pit.
I’m also happy to see that I helped modify your opinion in some way.
I’m glad you posted this thread for another reason…it’s something that I have wanted to say for awhile. Sometimes people agree, sometimes they don’t, but ultimately on this board, people are friends, or at least respect each other.
FWIW, I have never been anything but impressed by the majority of the thoughts, points, and debates that are posted on this board on a daily basis.

Quality post, Scylla, by a class-act poster.

Amazing, isn’t it, how the give-and-take here can honestly broaden the mind? Immediate or gradual, the discussions here have illuminated and enriched my life. (Not without some resistance, y’understand.)

I’ve come to believe that the distinctive “jerkish” attribute is a lack of honesty in posting and reacting. It’s a question of intent. People have, can and will disagree; flat out hammer-and-tongs arguing.

But if the parties are fundamentally honest in their intent, the whole shebang can be pretty damned great.

That’s the pull of the board. To be able to disagree with someone in one thread and bear arms with them in another. When you meet posters like that, it just makes the board a lot of fun. Course then you meet the posters that carry grudges to the ends of the earth. You dare not disagree with them or they’ll have your head every time you post in the same thread with them.

Diversity is the key to a good thread. I enjoy someone who is just honest and posts their opinions and thoughts, whether they be the same as mine or not.

I had the honor of participating in a go-round with Pepperlandgirl in one of her first threads. She got hammered by nearly everyone, myself included.

End result? She earned my respect. I pegged her as a poster with potential early on, and she’s proving it on a regular basis.

Keep it up, Pepper! You’re a fine addition to the SDMB!

Thank you Cristi…and at the time I was pretty upset about getting completely hammered on. But now I look back and realize it was an excellent learning experience, and I’m a better poster because of it. :wink:

What impressed my about Pepper was her admiting her viewpoint was wrong, and in GD, no less! Hell, I wonder if I could show that much humility, but as I am never wrong, I’ll never have the chance to know. :smiley:

I thought you were gonna say that pepperlandgirl had gotten banned or something. I was about to be really upset if that were true. We’ve never crossed paths other than I’ve read some of her postings (topics and/or replies) and I couldn’t imagine that there’d have been a reason for something bad to have happened to her in relation to the board.

Thank goodness I was wrong!!

Welcome back, pepperlandgirl, from the momentary banning you had in my head.

And yes, this is an awesome place to participate in interesting and enlightening discussions and debates because of all the cool posters that make it that way.
