This picture has been making its way around Tumblr and if the micro-blogging site is to be believed, this was left on a table for a waitperson to find. Apparently, this person’s discretionary spending is still such that they can eat at restaurants, just not tip.

I actually knew someone who tipped poorly because they were trying to save money.
If he makes enough money that Obama doesn’t think he’s paying his “fair share”, then he could afford to leave a tip if his taxes were twice as high as they are now.

I don’t get why it’s stupid. His taxes went up, so he has less disposable income, so he feels less generous. Seems fair.
I don’t understand why tipping seems to be perceived as an obligation in the US. I’m certainly not obliged to take on the burden of making up for someone’s poor wages. It’s just not my responsibility. I go to a restaurant and pay what I’m charged, I’m certainly not going to just give away money on top of that. So acting like this guy is in the wrong for not doing any more something he wasn’t ever obliged to baffles me.

I remember an old letter to Ann Landers or Dear Abby. The letter writer told how he and his wife would leave as a “tip” a Bible verse written on a small piece of paper for the wait person. He was quite smug about it.

They shouldn’t assume anything of their customers when they take their orders, tipping is NOT a well-understood, unspoken aspect of a waiter’s job that represents a large percentage of their take-home pay!
