Mark Volman died this week at the age of 78. The Turtles were one of my favorite groups in high school, cool, catchy songs that stood out even in those fab times. “Happy Together” was a classic number one and they had five other songs make the top ten.
Volman’s voice made him a favorite and he wound up singing with everyone from Frank Zappa to Blondie to Steely Dan.

RIP to a great singer and very funny guy
I saw Flo and Eddie a couple of times with Zappa back in their terrifically entertaining (but quite NSFW) “Just Another Band From LA” days.
Mark and Howard (Kaylan) together have been my favorite singers since the 60’s. Saw them as The Turtles in 1967, and as Flo & Eddie in ‘72 when they opened and stole a show from Loggins & Messina.
Their work with Zappa was the best pop/rock vocals I’ve ever heard, virtuoso performances (quoting Ian Underwood in Mark’s biography) “that would be more closely thought of as being relayed to modern classical singing, as opposed to straight pop singing.” They could handle anything Frank threw at them.
Mark’s passing is a celebrity death that hurts.
