Ok, crazy question - my wife, who LOVES television and movies, claims that she has never seen a single character eating bagel and lox on either (she actually didn’t know what it was till I told her today.)
So help me out - can anyone think of a scene where characters are doing so on either TV or the big screen?
Good question. I would be hard pressed to think of instances of characters just eating bagels, let alone bagels and lox (and capers and onions). Perhaps a Woody Allen film???
My gut feeling is a scene with lox will be rare since Lox would look bad on screen I think (heck it looks gross in real life! ).
I am sure there has to be a movie scene with a brunch or breakfast spread featuring bagels but none are coming to me.
Oh, last season Community had a subplot where they made fun of how one of the character said the word Bagel, I don’t remember specifically but they must have been serving bagels at some point.
edited to add: if the criteria is eating, it will be tough. how often do you see characters eating anything period? lots of food is served or displayed but actual eating is rare.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
When the Rabbi tells Robin Hood “Locksley and Bahgel, you can’t miss.” Not exactly the food, but at least a reference…
Superman (1978)
Marlon Brando reputedly suggested that his cameo role as Jor-El be done by him in voice over only, with the character’s image onscreen being a glowing, levitating green bagel. Unsure if Brando was joking or not, the film’s producers formally rejected the suggestion.
The Producers (2005)
Originally, this was almost shot in Toronto, Canada. New York State tax incentives made it possible for the production to film in New York City at the new Steiner Studios in Brooklyn. Producer Mel Brooks also jokingly complained that the bagels in Toronto were “too mushy”.
After Hours (1985)
The first 30 minutes of the film is based on radio artist Joe Frank’s 1982 NPR Playhouse monologue “Lies”. Some of the dialogue and plot elements in the film is lifted verbatim from the program including Paul meeting Marcy in the deli, the bagels-and-cream-cheese paperweights, Paul calling Marcy that same night to buy the paperweights, Paul losing his cab fare when it flies out of the window, Marcy being raped by an ex-boyfriend who came down the fire escape and falling asleep during said rape, Marcy being married to a man working overseas whom she writes to every day, and said husband’s sexual quirk. Joe Frank filed a lawsuit against the producers and was then paid handsomely in a settlement.

The Whitest Kids U’Know (2007 TV Series)
Episode: Episode #1.2 (2007)
The “Pizza Bagels” sketch almost didn’t air because producers thought it glorified spousal abuse.
The Award Showdown (2004 Video)
In November 2000, Joshua posted a six minute version of ‘The Award Showdown’ on the A.I. “Bagel Cam” messageboard on CountingDown.com, in hopes of getting Steven Spielberg to watch the short. Eventually Spielberg did and insisted to post it on CountingDown.com where it played alongside other short films that Spielberg, Ron Howard, and Steve Martin created for the DreamWorks-based website. The short film was then sent to film composer, John Williams, who loved it and granted Joshua with permission to use his famous movie scores in the film. Spielberg and his long-time producer, Kathleen Kennedy requested their own copies of the film so they could show their families.

I don’t have a specific cite, but I would look toward ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ (a deli scene) or ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ (seems like Buddy ate some in the office for breakfast at one time or another).
mmm
I can almost guarantee mention of a bagel. I believe it was when their delivered sandwiches had the ingredients mixed up. But I don’t remember lox in that scene or anywhere else on the show.
This reminds me! There was an episode where Larry hated the sandwich named after him which was served on a Bagel and may have included lox (he wanted to switch with Ted Danson) and in fact there is a scene where Larry’s father eats the sandwich in question.
