Shot in the chest at close range by pistol-wielding John Schrank prior to a campaign appearance in Milwaukee, the bullet was slowed by Roosevelt’s steel eyeglass case and the folded sheets of the fifty-page manuscript of his speech, eventually lodging in his chest. Waving off medical assistance, Roosevelt entered the hall, announced to the assembled audience as he showed them his blood-stained shirt, “Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot,” and then went on to deliver his ninety-minute speech before allowing himself to be taken to a hospital. The site of the shooting, the old Gilpatrick Hotel on Kilbourn Avenue, was razed in the 1940s and is now the site of a Hyatt Regency, although the modern hotel does bear a historical marker and a display related to the incident on the premises.

Aside — I wonder if D.J. “Dishonest John” Trump will try to compare himself to TR (who was a progressive Republican… an oxymoron in today’s political environment) during this week’s GOP convention, which coincidentally is being held at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee – located about a half-mile north of the site of the attempt on Roosevelt’s life.
(apologies for being so long-winded)

Another attempt a decade later was tragically successful, of course.
