Because for each one, our landlady cooks the dinner of the birthday person’s request. For my 40th birthday in 2022, I didn’t know what I wanted, but I knew I loved her mashed potatoes, so I requested that.

She cooked us an entire Thanksgiving dinner. In February.

And then later that night, Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.
