Toby (shortened from ‘Two-Buck Toby’, referring to his cost), a blue-and-white budgie
Inky-dinky, an undersized, jet black goat
Blanquita, a white cat, fluffy and pretty but unfriendly
Harold, our first dog, a white poodle with a funky haircut who liked to hump legs
Belton, a skinny, white-and-tan mutt
The local animal shelter was closed several times earlier when we went to get our next dog. When we finally got him my dad said, “Better late than never,” BLTN, which became his name.

Mrs. Bates, Trig
I was one of 7 seniors in the class. The rest were juniors. For the final exam, she had all the seniors sit in the first desk of each row. The senior version of the exam was all jokes and silly puns. We were snickering and giggling the whole time and the juniors kept asking why.

Mrs Drum, Film Studies
She taught “A” English to the underclass, and one Film Studies class to seniors. Basically, we watched movies and critiqued them, both orally and in a film journal we’d turn in every Friday. Most kids slept, but I dove into the curriculum, often stapling extra pages to my journal. I must’ve impressed her as she graded me with several A++++ on my journal.

There were jokes about the subject matter having been current events in her youth, and that she put the O-L-D in old maid, but she was a very good teacher and and made history fun. She inspired me to read Livy for summer entertainment

I learned about Hannibal crossing the Alps from him. Unfortunately, I did terrible in his class because my advisors didn’t tell me I had summer reading. I was a horrible student even though I was smart, and I had no business being in an accelerated course.

Smart, funny, very well-read, acerbic but with a heart of gold, and never mean; he was also faculty advisor for the drama club and gave me my first leading role in a play.

Mrs. O’Donnell, high school madrigal choir (all 4 years)
I mentioned that I was a terrible student. That time that I spent in choir was the light in my day. She helped keep me hopeful that there was still some good in the world. And I still sing in choir.
