Located in Puerto Rico, it’s not a particularly large city (pop. approx. 85,000; roughly comparable to Duluth, MN), but it was in the news in December 2020 when the Arecibo Telescope – which was in the process of being decommissioned – experienced a catastrophic failure of the support cables holding the 900-ton instrument package and antenna above the reflector dish, caused it to fall into the bowl-shaped structure below.
