The Bricker Challenge #1

OK.

Here’s how this got started. We’ve talked about the Dumbing of America. We’ve talked about Who Wants to be a Millionaire in several threads. And in some of them, there’s been some discussion about just what constitutes a stupid question… should everyone know what an integer is, for instance?

So at first I was going to post a GD topic on that: is there a list of things that a reasonably well-informed North American should know? But to be effective, I would have needed to include a proposed list, and I found myself getting bogged down trying to create one. I could put together lots of fun trivial facts… but not a meaningful list.

So then I thought… maybe I can just throw some of the facts up here, and see who knows 'em. Run the gamut from movie lore to literature to science to soap. See how many people get.

And then I thought… well, it’s almost a contest. And so… why not make it actually a contest?

Therefore… I now announce Bricker Challenge, Edition #1.

Following is a list of… stuff. Identify it. An example:

“Is the quality of mercy strained?” Your answer might be, “No. It falleth as gentle rains from the heavens.” (The classic speech from Portia in Merchant of Venice)

Another example:

“What’s Mr. Purple People Eater’s line?” Your answer might be, “Eating purple people, and it sure is fine.” (From Sheb Woolley’s novelty song).

Final example, a more simple question:

“What is NaCl?” Your answer might be, “The chemical symbols for sodium chloride, common table salt.”

Any answer that shows you get the reference is fine. I’m phrasing questions like that in an effort to cut down on the help that search engines can provide, although there’s no help for it… many will be answerable by search engine. There is no rule against using search engines (or any other reference) although I would appreciate if, just for curiousity’s sake, you note that you got the answer by search engine as opposed to simply knowing it.

If there’s a contest, there must be a prize.

I will award a case of beer, winner’s choice as to brand (as long as it’s reasonable) to the winner. The winner is the person that answers the most questions correctly by post here dated on or before Thursday, January 27th, 2000, at 11:00 PM EST. I reserve the right to substitute another prize of comparable value for any reason. My decisions are final as to the accuracy of all answers. I am also the sole judge of what’s reasonable in the beer department. If you’re under 21 or don’t drink, we’ll think of another good prize.

The next post will have the actual questions. Good luck!

Do we have to answer them all in one reply? I don’t have time to make my brain work very hard right now, but I can tell you the answer to some of them right off the top of my head without thinking…

Name the sport with a penalty for icing, and tell me what icing is. Answer: Hockey. And icing is the reason I hate this sport. It looks like players are icing all the time, but the refs only call it as a penalty when the mood suits them. LOL. It’s got something to do with making the puck go all the way to the other side of the ice when there are no players there from your own team.

What can we do together if the ink is black and the page is white? Answer: This is a line from a song by Three Dog Night. Together we learn to read and write.

Who pointedly showed us a Sunday afternoon on the grand island of Jatte? Answer: That would be the famous pointillist, Georges Seurat (an absolutely amazing painting - a must see if you’re ever in Chicago).

Who is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? Who is the President of the Senate? Who is the Speaker of the House? Answers: William Rehnquist, Vice President Al Gore, Dennis Hastert (Republican from Illinios).

Who was the second man on the Moon? Answer: Buz Aldrin

Xanadu was sung by a blonde, and described by a dope-fiend (and interrupted by a visitor from a village). Name the blonde, the fiend, and the village. Answer: I can only name the blonde - Olivia Newton-John.

Stamps come in all different colors. Why would anyone want green stamps? Answer: I’m assuming you’re referencing the long-ago “S&H Green Stamps” which were given at grocery check-outs and could be traded in for merchandise. I haven’t seen those since I was a kid.

Add another city that fits: Hartford, Pierre, Albany. Answer: Sacramento

Peter Piper did some gardening, right? Answer: Yep. He picked a peck of pickled peppers.

Iago was a villain’s parrot in one story, and a villain in another. Name them. Answers: Iago the villain was in Othello, Iago the parrot belonged to Jafar in Alladin.

What’s a safety in American football if he’s not a player? If he is a player, is he offensive or defensive? Answer: (HA! Easy one!) A safety is not a player when it’s a scoring term. That’s when a team forces the opposing team to down the ball in their own end zone. It’s worth 2 points, and the Rams got one off the Buc’s in Sunday’s game! (GO RAMS!!). When a safety IS a player, he plays on the defense. There are 2 of them, and they play the deepest in the backfield.

Who is the Greek god of war? Answer: Ares

If a mole isn’t digging in your garden, then what does it measure? Answer: It measures the reactions of substances in chemistry.

What is the purpose of backstiching in cross stitch? Answer: (WAG) To tie off a stitch in a knot.

What two ships came along for the Santa Maria’s historic voyage? Answer: The Nina and The Pinta.

Who is Regis Philbin’s wife? Answer: (I’m so embarrassed that I know this) Joy Philbin.

Who was Chico, and who was the man? Answer: Chico was played by Freddie Prinze and The Man was played by Jack Albertson in a tv series in the 70s.

What is a tort? Answer: A tort is a civil action that causes damages to a person or property for which monetary compensation can be awarded.

What’s eight the hard way? Answer: rolling double 4s.

How many ships did her face launch, and who was she? Answer: Her face can launch a thousand ships (because she started the Trojan War), and she was Helen of Troy.

Where could we find Luke and Laura? Answer: On the soap opera, General Hospital, living in the fictional town of Port Charles, NY.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank

Great stuff, Bricker!

My brain has turned to Farina, but a while back a guy named Hirsch made this sort of stuff a cottage industry. I’m fogged out on the titles, but they were something along the lines of “cultural literacy”.

Gotta say your list is better, as my failing memory serves. His was thin on the sciences, and the books were a while ago, so the stuff is probably pretty long in the tooth by now.

There is no requirement to answer them all in one post.

In case of a tie, the first post wins over subsequent posts.

No one has answered all the questions correctly yet… but I’m daunted at how quickly some of the tougher ones have fallen. Challenge #2 will be a little trickier.

  • Rick

Backstitching is used to letter the motto or outline a figure. In other words, it makes straight lines.

Coleridge’s visitor was from Porlock. (I got that from More of the Straight Dope!)

Remember, I’m pulling for you; we’re all in this together.
—Red Green

I’m not going to answer the ones that others already did because I won’t win, but I can clear up a few.

Icing- when the team with the puck clears it over both the red center line and no one touches it until it crosses the red goal line, and the other team recovers it.

Mole- used to quantify very large values. One mole = 6.02 x 10^23

Charles Montgomery Burns owns the nuclear power plant. Give me some points for that.

And how do you know that some people arent getting their answers from the post?

We must blame them and cause a fuss before somebody thinks of blaming us.
Sheila Broflofski

Well, if I win, I’ll have to split my prize with Catrandom and Shayna. (Sorry, Manduck2, but I didn’t use any of your answers.) And congratulations Bricker on the phrasing of your questions. Clever and funny.

Obviously, I looked up some answers (the sports answers, the biographical information for Edward VIII, and the exact words to the ink/paper song.) The internet and the New York Library Public Library Desk Reference were used. And if I didn’t have to work graveyard this evening (database maintenance), there’s no way I would have answered this!

Infraction - icing occurs when a player shoots the puck from within his own half of the rink across the opponent’s goal line. Icing is waved-off if the team icing the puck is shorthanded or a player from the defending team could have played the puck before it crossed the goal line or if a player of the icing team plays the puck before it crosses the goal line.

What’s a safety in American football if he’s not a player? If he is a player, is he offensive or defensive?
Safety: The situation in which the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal if the impetus comes from a player on that team. Two points are scored for the opposing team.

  1. The important factor in a safety is impetus. Two points are scored for the opposing team when the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal line if the impetus came from a player on that team.
    Examples of Safety:
    (a) Blocked punt goes out of kicking team’s end zone. Impetus was provided by punting team. The block only changes direction of ball, not impetus.
    (b) Ball carrier retreats from field of play into his own end zone and is downed. Ball carrier provides impetus.
© Offensive team commits a foul and spot of enforcement is behind its own goal line.
    (d) Player on receiving team muffs punt and, trying to get ball, forces or illegally kicks (creating new impetus) it into end zone where it goes out of the end zone or is recovered by a member of the receiving team in the end zone.
    Examples of Non-Safety:
    (a) Player intercepts a pass with both feet inbounds in the field of play and his momentum carries him into his own end zone. Ball is put in play at spot of interception.
    (b) Player intercepts a pass in his own end zone and is downed in the end zone, even after recovering in the end zone. Impetus came from passing team, not from defense. (Touchback)
© Player passes from behind his own goal line. Opponent bats down ball in end zone. (Incomplete pass)
When a safety is a player, he plays on the defense.

Who is the Greek god of war?

If a mole isn’t digging in your garden, then what does it measure?

You like the number 49 don’t ya? This was fun, I’m looking forward to #2.

FYI, that first pass was done without any aid, and no web searching.

Would someone explain the Diminished 5th and Augmented 4th to me, what is that from?

Some of those questions are awfully dated I think. How far back does that Ivory Soap, Green stamps and General Hospital
question go? And what significance does Regis’ wife have, should I know this, is she a celebrity, or does he just talk about her too much on the daytime show? I must say the biblical references always anger me in quiz shows, who are they to say that the Torah or Bible or Koran are significant. Generally a good sampling of questions, except the pop culture stuff is very centered on the 70s.

Don’t worry Omni… I have my questions about a few of these things too… but I just sold my snowboard to a guy who works for a beer distriburtor, so I’m getting 11 cases!! 3 Bass, 3 Guinnness, 3 Harps, 4 SN Pale Ale. Forget about that “paltry” case of brew that he is offering!!

The most rewarding part was when I got my money!
-Dr. Nick Riviera

With respect to the pop culture stuff being centered on the 70s - good point. Next edition will have a bit more variety in this regard.

I’m going to hold off explaining any questions until a winner is declared.

I’m not sure a question can be ‘dated’ except if it’s superseded by new information. If I asked about the longest song at #1 on Billboard, the answer is no longer “Singing the Blues” by Guy Mitchell.

Ir’s true that you don’t see green stamps offered when you buy gas too much these days. But that’s what makes it… uh… trivia. Ditto Luke & Laura, ditto that particular Ivory Snow girl. As to the Bible/Torah questions, these are books that everyone’s heard of - they’re fair game, much as Gone With the Wind might be.

Glad you (generally) liked these!

Stupid people surround themselves with smart people. Smart people surround themselves with smart people who disagree with them. - Isaac Jaffee (new quote)

After reading some of the other posts, and re-reading the OP, I decided to post the true facts of my knowledge vs. reference vs. quoting another poster, to be fair.

My comments on the questions: a fair sample of general trivia, except for the fact that this is obviously geared towards American audiences. It would probably be more challenging to include more information from other countries, especially since foreign countries have a much smaller internet presence. for example, I defy anyone to find information on the “Barbapapa” on the internet, but a french or swiss 30/40-year old would know who they are.

Arnold, the reason it is American centered is because that is the OP. Go read it again - it’s about the dumbing of America, not the dumbing of the world or the dumbing of Europe.

Not bothering to post - most of them left me clueless until others started answering them.

And maybe part of the dumbing of America is the fact that americans have a tendency to ignore the rest of the world?
