The Bricker Challenge #1

Omniscient - Aug 4th and Dim 5th are musical terms. 4ths and 5ths are intervals between notes. (Do to Fa and Do to So respectively) An augmented note is one half step up and a diminished is one half step down. Since there is a whole step between a 4th and a 5th, an Aug 4th and a Dim 5th are the same thing.

Computers have let mankind make mistakes faster than any other invention, with the possible exception of tequila and handguns.

Arnold,

The only reason I haven’t ended the contest and decalred you the winner is that you’ve only posted forty-nine correct answers. I just thought you should know…

As to the rules… when I set this up, I thought that there were two possible winning strategies. If one knew all the answers, it’s advantageous to post them quickly, and forclose any one else’s win.

If you didn’t know them, on the other hand, it became more interesting; I thought there would be a struggle to hold your post in abeyance as opposed to posting first with, say, forty correct answers just in case NOBODY had better than forty right answers. In that case, the early bird would win.

Anyway, I never intended it to be a honor system type of thing, because there’s always the potential for one bad apple spoiling the whole bunch, girl. This is why I asked, just for curiousity’s sake… for the post on where you got the answers.

Anyway… that’s where we stand now!

  • Rick

Damn! I went for the “early bird” approach, and I got hosed! Now my only hope is that other people are too lazy to find my error. (It’s the cross-stitch answer, isn’t it?? Tell me! Tell me!)

P.S. I hope you did count my “amended” answer, where I added the third Xanadu bit of trivia that I stole from Rilchiam.

And of course, if we do win, it’s a team effort with Catrandom, Shayna, Rilchiam.

I just realized that us four make up a Southern California Doper trivia team! Go SCal!

I counted your amended Xanadu answer. You are still one shy of perfect.

What’s a safety in American football if he’s not a player? If he is a player, is he offensive or defensive?
-Safety: The situation in which the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal if the impetus comes from a player on that team. Two points are scored for the opposing team.

  1. The important factor in a safety is impetus. Two points are scored for the opposing team when the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal line if the impetus came from a player on that team.
    Examples of Safety:
    (a) Blocked punt goes out of kicking team’s end zone. Impetus was provided by punting team. The block only changes direction of ball, not impetus.
    (b) Ball carrier retreats from field of play into his own end zone and is downed. Ball carrier provides impetus.
© Offensive team commits a foul and spot of enforcement is behind its own goal line.
    (d) Player on receiving team muffs punt and, trying to get ball, forces or illegally kicks (creating new impetus) it into end zone where it goes out of the end zone or is recovered by a member of the receiving team in the end zone.
    Examples of Non-Safety:
    (a) Player intercepts a pass with both feet inbounds in the field of play and his momentum carries him into his own end zone. Ball is put in play at spot of interception.
    (b) Player intercepts a pass in his own end zone and is downed in the end zone, even after recovering in the end zone. Impetus came from passing team, not from defense. (Touchback)
© Player passes from behind his own goal line. Opponent bats down ball in end zone. (Incomplete pass)
When a safety is a player, he plays on the defense.

Who is the Greek god of war?

If a mole isn’t digging in your garden, then what does it measure?

With extremely honortable mention for Arnold, nonetheless based on the rules, Omniscient is the winner of Bricker Challenge #1.

What’s your choice for beer, and where do you want it? E-mail me, please, to provide your address.

Wow. I really thought a winning score would be 35, maybe 40 correct. Who knew all fifty questions would fall so easily?

I am impressed!

Stand by for Challenge #2 in the next day or two!

That depends, Arnold. Are you referring to the blobby characters from children’s books who could change shapes?

Hey there Arnold - good effort! I kindof figured he’d let us change our answers since he was hinting around about how many we’d missed. It just never occurred to me to change your answers for you. But we’ll know better next time, won’t we

Congrats Omniscient. You outwitted us, but I wouldn’t say you out"smarted" us!

Well, it’s the first game. It takes a little while to nail down strategy…

Heck, I invented the game, and it became clear I hadn’t thought all the strategy possibilities out.

Given the inevitable use of the internet, I realize my fond dream of coming up with stuff people should just know is fading into the mists. Ah, well.

[grumbling] Using a search engine for this game is kinda like taking a dictionary to a spelling test. [/grumbling]

Plunging like stones from a slingshot on Mars.

That was fun. Maybe, Bricker, you could do the contest by e-mail. That might mean more work for you, I don’t know, but it would be fun if you responded to people’s e-mails on the SDMB. That way all the contestants would see is messages like

“Four wrong, Aaron”

“Two left, Omniscient”

and like that. Very tense for the contestants.
