~SNOOGANS~

Yo Bricker -

I have a question for ya on a “correct” answer. Should I ask here, or email, since the contest isn’t over yet…

Grace and I have made this a team effort. Here is the “key” to how we arrived at our answers…

*I knew it from memory.
@Brenda knew it from memory. (She also knew many of the ones I knew, but since I’d already answered them, she didn’t need to. She picked up where I left off.)
~One or the other of us looked up the answer.
*~I knew it, or had a strong recollection, but had to look it up for confirmation.

  1. What device mixes vaporized fuel and air for an engine? *A carburator ~

  2. The Masons are a secret society, but what Mason was reunited with his son by Bart and Lisa? The famous Mason Dixon, of course. Duh!

  3. What is tableaux vivant? It’s either a colorful work of art (painting) or a “living work of art,” as in a play, I can’t make up my mind. Can I get credit if either one is right?

  4. What am I hooked on, if I can’t stop this feeling deep inside of me? **I-I-I, I’m hooked on a feelin’. I’m high on believin’ that you’re in love with me. ***

  5. In Scrabble, A is worth 1 and B is worth 4. But Scrabble aside, during World War II, A was worth four and B was worth about eight, C was even better and X was unlimited. Explain. Don’t you wish. Those are highly classified military secrets. If I told you, I’d have to kill you.

  6. The lion may be king of the jungle, but what children’s story series elephant is royal? **Babar the elephant. ***

  7. What is a one-eyed jack? **A Jack in a deck of playing cards that is facing profile so only one eye can be seen. ***

  8. He loved Daisy so much he went away, got rich, came back, and built a mansion to impress her. Who was he? **The Great Gatsby. ***

  9. Who killed Laura Palmer? Her father, Leland Palmer. ~

  10. If you’re not a bartender, but you like ESPN, what’s a triple double? When a player scores double digits in rebounds, assists and total points scored. @

  13. U2’s lead singer is Bono, but how does Gary Powers fit in? He piloted a U2 that landed in the Soviet Union after experiencing engine trouble (he was purported to have been shot down, but he wasn’t), and he was captured by the Russians in 1960. ~

  14. In golf, what is a provisional ball? A bunch of convoluted rules that don’t seem to make a bit of sense. Here’s the gist of it… If the original ball is lost in an immovable obstruction or in casual water, ground under repair or certain damage to the course, the player may play another ball from the spot where it was originally played (But he/she has to “call” it before their opponents go looking for the original ball). Now I know why I don’t golf. ~

  15. Saddam Hussein has attacked the Kurds, but who’s actually fond of curds and whey? **Little Miss Muffet (while she sat on her tuffet). ***

  16. Male bonding was important to the Greeks, but what can you say about Ionic bonding? Ionic bonds are formed between oppositely charged ions because of electrostatic forces of attraction. ~

  17. At whose work are you looking, if you note that the citizens of Calais seem to be standing very still? Rodin’s (in The Burghers of Calais). ~

  18. A marshal removes a general, and a general removes a colonel, and a colonel removes a spy. But a spy can remove a marshal, right? *You’re playing Stratego, and the answer is yes. The spy is the only piece in the game which can kill the Marshal, but ONLY if the Spy attacks first. ~

  19. Marcel and Rodolpo must burn their work to stay warm, and Mimi dies of consumption. Where are we? *In Bohemia, the Latin quarter of Paris (La Boheme). ~

  20. What word describes a substance moving through the semi-permeable membrane of a living cell? *Osmosis ~

  21. Stanford killed Harry over Evelyn, right? Nope - you’ve got that backwards. Harry Thaw murdered Stanford White because Thaw believed White was having an affair with Thaw’s wife, Evelyn Nesbit. ~

  22. What is Dr. Virginia Apgar known for? **She came up with the “Apgar Test” for newborns to determine their level of health at birth. ***

  24. What game is Gary Gygax credited with inventing? Lejendary Adventure. ~

  25. Alexander Hamilton and Ben Franklin are the only two now, but at one time Salmon P. Chase was also part of the group. **Are you sure Hamilton and Franklin are the only two now? I was going to say they all have had their picture on US paper money that had 1’s in the denomination, but George Washington is still on the $1.00 bill. Well anyway, Chase used to be on the $10,000.00 bill, until they quit printing them. (Hamilton is on the $10.00 and Franklin is on the $100.00). *~ **

  28. What are marshmallows made of? Well I don’t know about all of them, but mine are made of corn syrup, sugar, dextrose, food starch-modified (corn), water, gelatin, artificial color, artificial and natural flavor, tetrasodium pyrophosphate & blue #1. (I looked on my bag)

  29. If the area bounded by y=3x^2, x=0, and x=2 is rotated about the x axis, what is the volume of the resulting solid? Too dang loud! Now turn that down - you’re breakin’ my eardrums!

  30. What climbs Jacob’s ladder? **Your fingers (it’s a string figure). ***

  31. Maris was the never-seen ex-wife of Niles Crane on Frasier, but Maris’ 1961 achievement isn’t quite so important these days. Why? Uhhhm, I dunno. And I can’t even think of anything remotely humorous to say about this one. Yikes!

  32. Who thought Rush Limbaugh was a big fat idiot? Well, besides me, Al Franken. ~

  33. Beluga is the best. Best what? **The best caviar, of course. ***

  34. Alonso Quijana’s delusions make up a large part of what story? The Man of LaMancha. ~

  39. What doctor speculated that men and women are from different planets? **John Gray. ***

  40. What car had a single headlight in the center that turned with the wheels? Johnny Quest’s spaceship wasn’t a car, so that doesn’t qualify. I give. What was it?

  41. “Hey, ref! If you had one more eye, you’d be a Cyclops!” Why’s that funny? Because he was reviewing the instant replay in the Rams/Bucs game on Sunday!

  42. What do Demi, Dudley, and Roger have in common? **Their last names are all Moore. ***

  43. Of the four major sports leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL) how many pairs of teams have the same name? I spent a lot of time trying to come up with questions that were immune to the Internet… this was one I thought was ironclad safe.

Nice job.

Thanks

Here’s what I did. Not knowing whether those were all characters in a story or play, or if they were real people, I went to ask.com and posed the question, “What do Stanford, Harry & Evelyn have in common?” One of the resulting websites was titled, “The Players: Evelyn Nesbit Thaw, Harry Thaw & Stanford White.” That site didn’t have the answer, but I could discern from it that these were real people. I went back to ask.com and posed, “Was Harry Thaw killed by Stanford White?” and got this page as one of the results. Not too difficult, if you know what to ask.

And as you can probably tell, I was very tired and a bit slap happy when doing this last night. I cannot believe I missed the question about Maris - given that I’m from St. Louis, where that record was broken - Duh! And the commonality between Hamilton, Franklin and Chase completely escaped me at that hour - LOL. Modified answer is, they were all non-Presidents who do, or have, appeared on US paper currency. (Hamilton and Chase were both Secretaries of the Treasury, for the record). I did know that - honest.

And to clear up any confusion, Brenda and Grace are the same person. Grace is her posting name and Brenda is her RL name.

I won’t go back and change or add to our answers though. If no one’s declared the “winner” and Grace feels like coming on line and modifying them, she’s welcome to. I don’t really care that much about being the winner - we just had a blast playing. Thanks again, Bricker!
