  1. Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell

A mordant history of the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy

What Are You Reading At The Moment?

  1. Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell
  2. A Carnival of Snackery by David Sedaris

A collection of his funny, offbeat journal entries (the title is taken from a line on the menu of an Indian restaurant in London). Vowell and Sedaris are friends, as it happens.

  3. I Know Better Now: My Life Before, During and After the Ramones by Richie Ramone with Peter Aaron

I saw Richie in concert a couple weeks ago and bought his book there. He was very gracious with his fans and signed the book and posed for a pic with me.

  4. Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell

Someone on Khadaji’s Whatcha Reading Thread said they didn’t finish it because of the purple prose, but I thought it was excellent (I’m rereading it at leisure after racing through) and well deserving of the multiple awards it received.

That was me! Yeah, it was too purple for my taste but I’m glad you enjoyed it.

One of the books in his Old Man’s War series, told from the perspective of a teenage girl on a human planetary colony trying to hide from hostile aliens. Good stuff.

  6. The Deserters by Luke Short

A drugstore paperback Western that I got in a box of books years ago and only now, am getting around to reading. I always liked Westerns, and this one is good so far: saloon brawls, women of questionable virtue, a corrupt sheriff, and there will undoubtedly be a gunfight before the end.

  9. From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death by Caitlin Doughty

“Fascinated by our pervasive fear of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty embarks on a global expedition to discover how other cultures care for the dead. From Zoroastrian sky burials to wish-granting Bolivian skulls, she investigates the world’s funerary customs and expands our sense of what it means to treat the dead with dignity.”

And @DZedNConfused thanks for dropping in! Yes, I can understand why some might find Hamnet “too purple”, but I love purple and fuschia, in clothes and sometimes in prose. There’s no accounting for tastes; for example, Sally Rooney has a huge following but she’s just not for me.
