Movies that were actually about your father
- The Man Who Would Be King
- Twelve O’Clock High (My dad flew bombers in WW II, and as a kid, I imagined this movie was about him)
- The Manchurian Candidate (Actually, my father in law, who looked a LOT like Frank Sinatra in his younger days. My wife’s mother was the spitting image of Janet Leigh. I am a lucky man.)
- The Paper Chase (My dad was a college perfesser, but not Harvard Law)
- To Kill A Mockingbird (my father was and is a small-town lawyer, just as honest and upright as Atticus if perhaps not quite as perfect)
- Frequency (Stubborn, hard-working single father who tinkered with shortwave radios, and whose smoking ended his life too early.)
- Mississippi Burning (My Dad was an FBI agent, who helped with the investigation)
- Battle of the Bulge (Dad was there)
- Salute to the Marines (Dad grew up in the Philippines and was a child during WWII, watching dogfights in the skies above; this WWII movie is about The Battle of the Philippines)
- Welcome Back Kotter. My Dad was a teacher in Brooklyn.
- The Quiet Man
- Borat (The shithole village in Romania where my Dad lived was just a few miles from, and exactly as shown, as where Borat’s home town was filmed. We caused a minor water-buffalo stampede when we drove in.)

- Road Trip (my Dad took us everywhere. I grew up in the back seats of station wagons as we explored every one of the 50 states, and Canada)
I’ll pass.
Movies that were actually about your mother
- The Prince of Tides
(Oddly, she actually recommended this one to me…must’ve missed the point.)

- The Prince of Tides
- Ordinary People
(not to that extreme, but the same dynamic)

- Come Fly With Me (1963): my mother, a Philippine Airlines stewardess, was the 1959 Miss Aviation and had a full-cover picture on the Manila Times’ Sunday magazine - in a bathing suit, mind you

Everybody who knew her when she was a child said that when the little girl Idgie came down the stairs with scraped knees and then got into a fight it reminded them of my mother when she was a child.

Moving the thread along: I can picture my Mom playing "dirty" scrabble like the two old ladies. I haven’t seen Foul Play in ages, I never realized that one of the old ladies was Aunt Bee’s best friend on the Andy Griffith Show.

- Desk Set (introduced indexes, DBs in 1960s to huge science society)
It’s taking over two days each for these last two topics.
I’m guessing my “Movies that were actually about my sister” topic won’t go over well then?
