The Beatles were at the height of the fame and they said they were interested in starring in the movie (with John as Gollum, Paul as Frodo, George as Gandalf, and Ringo as Sam). And they wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct. UA was interested by the terms couldn’t be worked out.
