In the movie, Glinda was the Good Witch of the North. In the books, she was the Good Witch of the South.

Dorothy encountered both good witches separately in the book. It was the Good Witch of the North who first appeared when Dorothy arrived in Oz and advised her to go to the Emerald City. When that plan didn’t work, Dorothy then went to see the Good Witch of the South, who tells Dorothy her shoes have the power to send her home.

This avoids the plot hole in the movie where generations of viewers have wondered why Glinda didn’t just tell Dorothy how to go back to Kansas right away.
