  10. Newsday.com, the newspaper for Long Island, NY which has a population of 3 million, has an absurd paywall. Rather than allowing a few free articles per month, it gives readers 2 sentences of the article and then tells them to pay $15/month to continue reading.

So happy to see another Lawn Guylinder here.

  13. Census.gov-
This is one of the richest websites on the net- possibly THE richest. It is possible to find out such things as (no exaggeration) how many gas pumps are in Lubbock, TX or Asian-Americans over the age of 90 in any metro area or how much lignite is mined per state and what the crime and average house value is not just for your state but for your neighborhood, but good luck finding it. It’s easy enough to get a fact sheet for a state or metro-area, but the really detailed info might as well be written in 12th century Latin.

Popular movies based on a true story that made MAJOR changes or omissions to the facts and examples of the changes.

  1. The Sound of Music-
Changes: The real Maria was not a governess to the Baron’s 7 kids but a nurse to one special needs daughter, the Baron was 25 years her senior and by her own admission she did not love him when they married, in real life Maria was the strict disciplinarian while the Baron was the fun loving and easy going parent (this was the change the real von Trapp children said bothered them most- they said their dad could not have been less military in the way he treated his kids but if anything was too permissive- Maria otoh had a terrible temper), they did not leave immediately after their honeymoon but when she was pregnant with their third child, and it wasn’t by climbing the mountains into Switzerland but by taking a train to Italy.
ETA: In interest of space you can just include the title in the list.

  2. Tombstone
Really, every retelling of the gunfight at the OK Corral vastly oversimplifies the conflict, but a fairly important detail is that Wyatt Earp, in order to further his political ambitions, was hunting down a gang of stagecoach robbers and enlisted the help of Ike Clanton, who agreed to identify the robbers in exchange for the bounty offered by Wells-Fargo. (Earp didn’t care about the money; he wanted the credit.) Clanton however was terrified the gang would find out and eventually became convinced Earp was going to rat him out to them. This, rather than the largely fictitious proto-Mafia story depicted in Tombstone, is what drove the conflict that led to the gunfight.

  3. Night and Day
This Hollywood version of the life of Cole Porter glossed over things like his wife’s cancer and his bisexuality. It’s DeLovely did a much better job and even has Cole (Kevin Kline) commenting on the inaccuracies in Night and Day.

  1. The Sound of Music-
  2. Tombstone
  3. Night and Day
  4. Funny Girl

Changes: Fanny Bryce and Nick Arnstein were both married when they met- their first spouses are completely omitted from the movie. They began cohabiting after Fanny’s separation but before her divorce from her first husband and she had to pay off Arnstein’s first wife to avoid negative publicity. Far from turning to embezzling to avoid being seen as “Mr. Fanny Brice” Arnstein was already a convicted con-artist when they met and was a notorious deadbeat who freely spent his wife’s money (including money she had not earned yet). Unlike the suave Omar Sharif whose looks make Fanny and chorus girls go weak in the knees, he was 6’6 and skinny and not good looking.
He was, however, loved by his daughter, whose husband produced both the play and the movie Funny Girl. (He was still alive when the show opened on Broadway but died before the movie.)

  5. JFK (great movie, but pure baloney from start to finish; Jim Garrison was an utter buffoon).

  4. Funny Girl
  5. JFK
  6. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Bad movie based on great book, both of which happened to be largely fictitious. For one thing John Berendt only met Jim Williams after he was already on trial for murder and when he did it was very casual “how do you do” affair- they weren’t at all bosom buddies like they were in the book and movie. Basically he took tales he heard second and third+ hand from the characters he did know (Lady Chablis and Joe Odom [who was bisexual IRL]) and inserted himself into them. Also, unlike in the movie there was not a single murder trial: there were four murder trials for the same killing.

  7. Lincoln

A fine movie, but… the awful opening scene where soldiers quote Lincoln’s famous speeches to him is pure invention; there were no black observers in the gallery of the House when the vote was taken on the 13th Amendment; and there is no evidence that Mary Todd Lincoln’s dressmaker spoke directly to the President about abolition, or that Thaddeus Stevens took the approved amendment home to show his maid/mistress. And then there’s the Connecticut controversy…: http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/07/showbiz/lincoln-error/

  8. Man For All Seasons

Omits Thomas More’s children other than his daughter Meg (who was not the daughter of Alice but of his first wife). Also omits More’s less sympathetic moments, such as when he not only ordered the torture and burning of heretics but lied to them to assure them of their safety (his logic being that the lie was a kindness if he saved their souls). Portrays Cromwell as a total opportunist when (and this is not just from WOLF HALL) he in fact remained loyal to Wolsey after the Cardinal’s fall from royal favor.
Still a great play, just not meant to be taken as history. (His refusal to enter a plea IS true.)

  9. Straight Outta Compton

A recent example. The movie didn’t mention Arabian Prince, who was one of the founding members. It made no reference to Dr Dre’s history of abusing women. Other people had their roles in past events increased or diminished based on how involved they were with the production of the movie.
