A Night In The Lonesome October, by Roger Zelazny
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Peshawar Lancers by S.M. Stirling
It didn’t “turn out” badly. I just got a semi-friendly warning.
What happened is… first ,bear in mind that I am not teaching at a private or religious school. I teach at a large, affluent public high school where religion is a private matter (no school prayers, no Bible reading in class, nothing like that). This is not a stereotypical Deep South Bible Belt school- it’s a well-to-do suburb of Austin.
I teach a World History course. In my first day, I had a Powerpoint presentation covering roughly 3 million years of human evolution. I mentioned casually, “If you go to a church that says the Earth is 5000 years old and was created in 6 days, well, that’s the right answer in Sunday School, but it’s wrong here.”
Apparently, a student told his parents I was a heathen mocking the Bible in class, and the front office got an angry call.
I was advised to be careful and to be moderate in my tone. I can do that, of course, but since I happen to know I’m one of the only Christian Republicans on the faculty, I was astonished at being the only one cited for being anti-Christian!

That’s the part that surprised me. Too bad it’s too late for me to make the change upthread.
