Hoover made a financially disastrous marketing promotion when they offered two free round trip airline tickets to customers who purchased more than £100 worth of its products. Initially the free flights were limited to Europe but later expanded to include flights to the United States. Customers found they could buy the washing machine or vacuum and the free flight voucher was worth much more than the appliance. Hoover lost almost £50 million on the promotion, and their Royal Warrant.
