I note that gkster said this about Rockwell’s painting of Ruby Bridges:

I had the privilege of seeing Norman Rockwell’s original of this work at an art exhibition of his works when I was in Chicago back in about 2000. Along with the originals of the famous Saturday Evening Post covers, and his works for the Boy Scouts and the US Army and such, was this painting. In real life, it is gripping. Heck, it is more than gripping, and I recall a few people at the exhibition who were overcome by it. As I recall, it is about six feet wide, by four feet tall, and it drags you into its story. I am sure that Rockwell’s painting, published in various forms as it was, especially by someone known to do nice, slice-of-life white Americana pictures, affected Americans who might not otherwise pay attention to news and current events–but this got their attention. Thus I nominate him to this thread.
