He died at age 62 and it’s surprising that he didn’t go earlier. “I spend a hell of a lot of time killing animals and fish,” he told Ava Gardner, “so I won’t kill myself.”
First reported in the news as an “accident” while cleaning a gun, it being in 1962 when the stigma was much greater
