Sampiro, Ron Chernow’s bio Alexander Hamilton has a very interesting discussion of the scandal he suffered. Hamilton didn’t do himself any favors by writing a pamphlet in which he admitted the affair but argued that no government money had changed hands. His public standing never fully recovered.
