A trivia side-note. Many people associate this song with the Nazis and think of it as being about Germany ruling the world. But that wasn’t its original point.

It was written in the 1840’s when Germany was still split up into dozens of little independent countries. The writer was telling people they should stop thinking about their little town or county first and start thinking about Germany as their country.

Yes, I’ve always understood it as “Germany above all other petty local concerns,” not “Germany can kick the ass of all other countries” (although that was the Nazi spin on it).

Just thought I’d interrupt (and maybe keep alive) this thread by mentioning that it started a year ago today.

I like to think I’ve been doing my part but I’m not a baseball fan so I got nothing for this current category.

Well, I am!

For a minute (or a day) there, I was afraid I had killed this thread. Remember that I just asked for players (as opposed to trades), so non-fans can Wiki some of the names above and see who was on the other side of those deals.

Using Sternvogel’s reverse trade idea.

I’m getting the distinct feeling that not many Dopers are baseball fans, judging by how long this one is taking.

oh, I am a fan - but not a rabid one - I have no idea who plays for which team - I just keep rooting for my Metsies
