The Van Halen brothers’ first instrument was piano. Eddie adopted both drums and guitar later as a challenge. Obviously, the guitar is where he made his reputation.
EVH wanted to incorporate keys and synths into the Van Halen’s sound after their first two albums. David Lee Roth resisted, preferring to stick to blues-influenced hard rock. Eventually, Eddie won out and got to pen and perform a few synth-driven songs for the album 1984. Two of them became huge hit singles “Jump” (#1) and “I’ll Wait” (Top 20). Despite becoming a big MTV star on the strength of 1984’s singles, Roth was dissatisfied with Van Halen’s new direction and left the band to pursue a successful solo career.
Eddie Van Halen subsequently wrote and recorded many more keyboard-driven songs for the band: “Why Can’t This Be Love”, “Dreams”, “Love Walks In”, “When It’s Love”, “Right Now”, etc.
There are Alan Parsons Project albums on which Parsons sticks to engineering and producing. But he played both keys and guitar on the act’s first two albums, and is a credited player on at least two other APP albums.
I love being educated. Thank you!
Carry on.

He was trained as a classical cellist and played upright bass in bands before he became a bass guitarist. He also played piano, guitar and harmonica.
I googled Freddie. I had no idea. Ignorance fought again.
Merçi.
You’re quite welcome. I knew Freddie played keyboards, of course, but having seen the film Bohemian Rhapsody, where he plays the guitar in a few scenes, I got curious. So I googled also. Sure enough, he could play the guitar, and composed a few songs on it. He couldn’t play it as well as Brian May on lead guitar, but he was a competent rhythm guitarist, as he demonstrated in the studio and occasionally, in concert.
I’m finding this Baker’s Dozen educational also. Let’s carry on, folks!
