Author of Don Quixote. He was captured by Albanian pirates and sold as a slave in modern day Algeria. After five years he and other enslaved Spaniards were allowed to be ransomed by his parents and the Catholic church as part of a treaty between Spain and the Ottomans (who controlled Algeria).
