Probably the only time when a national convention was unable to produce a candidate. The southern delegates wouldn’t agree to a northern Presidential candidate and the northern delegates wouldn’t agree to a southern one. The convention finally adjourned and then the two groups of delegates each reconvened their own convention to name a regional candidate for the Democratic party. (In an unsuccessful attempt at reconciliation, each convention named a Vice Presidential candidate from the other region.)
