Got hit by an economic crisis five weeks into his term of office that ended up lasting for the rest of his administration. Not undeserved bad luck because the crisis was largely caused by Jackson’s economic policies, which Van Buren had supported.

It wasn’t going to happen. Polk knew he was ill and died only three months after leaving office.
