I don’t have a name to contribute to this category, but I’d like to add that Charlie Ward, former Heisman Trophy winner, was a relative bust in the NBA.

Oh, he wasn’t terrible, but as Jeremy on Sports Night said: “If you put any defensive pressure on him, he’s gonna bend like a cheap card table.”

Ummm… I know this is picky, but Jay Berwanger wasn’t a bust as a pro. Rather, the Chicago Bears lowballed him after drafting him. Berwanger had other job offers outside of football that paid better, so he chose not to play pro football at all.

We’ll never know if he would have been good.

Yale’s Clint Frank was another Heisman winner (in 1937) who decided not to play professional football. It may surprise modern fans but being a professional football player didn’t use to be all that great a job prospect. It was a middle class career at best and many players worked second jobs to make ends meet.

The players didn’t get a guaranteed minimum salary until 1970 - and that minimum was $9000 a year (the equivalent of about $53,000 in current dollars).
