    The whole affair was almost comical in how it turned out, and nobody was hurt except perhaps for dignity, but according to a couple of biographies Lincoln, who was known for self deprecation and a sense of humor, did not like people to joke about the incident or even mention it; it was one of the issues he was sensitive about. Though he was actually more instrumental in the histories of Minnesota and Missouri, Shields is one of the Illinois statues in the Capitol.
