Balance of Terror Re-mastered (9/17)

Couldn’t see it well enough, like I said, and I must be getting old because in the past I was too busy admiring Yeoman Rand’s architecture to notice anything about her hair except that it was tall.

Just took another look at the tape. Four points:

  • What was the book in the briefing room when Spock demonstrates how the Romulan weapon made the Earth outpost’s armor so brittle? Kirk pushes the book towards Spock, but I didn’t catch anyone referring to it directly.

  • As the Romulan energy-ball weapon is approaching the Enterprise, which is backing up as fast as it can go, Rand gets closer and closer to Kirk, who embraces her in what they both think are their final moments alive. Reminds me that, in Stephen Whitfield’s book The Making of Star Trek, Roddenberry talked about the level of realism he was shooting for, and specifically said that a U.S. Navy captain would never embrace a female officer on the bridge of a Navy vessel in the midst of a crisis. Uh, yeah, Gene. Good idea. Too bad you didn’t stick to it.

  • Uhura had to hit four buttons, and Kirk one, just so that he could address the entire ship. Seems a bit cumbersome.

  • Watch Spock running back to the phaser control room after he overhears Kirk on the shipwide intercom and realizes something’s gone wrong. Spock simply cannot maintain his dignity as he runs pell-mell down the hall.

Yes, I’m a Trek geek.

That last bit was on the “Camelot/Trek” clip which is currently floating around on Youtube. A
LOL riot.

I always thought that the book contained info on comets and other astrological information in the area. Kirk began to hand Spock the book so he could look it up, but he was so smart, he didn’t need to look.

Where did you find that?

In my area, the next remastered episode will be “Devil in the Dark,” airing tomorrow. Yay! Hortas!

They can be found on the official Star Trek web site

I shall be more dilligent in my search.

Dredging up this thread instead of starting another. It was on at midnight yesterday where I live, and I’m tired today. I missed Balance of Terror (boo!) but I thought they did a great job on Devil in the Dark. The Horta was a bit more interesting, but still Horta-ish. I haven’t seen a clean version in ages, but the caves looked great. Great episode also.

Are they cut? I’ve been recording the uncut ones on G4, and it’s just to darn much to edit with a DVR load every Saturday and goofy timers.

And, WHERES THE DAMN…Sorry. The link I found on StarTrek.com for local stations doesn’t work. Were’s the link to find local stations?

Thanks.

The Horta was more Horta-ish? I didn’t think they changed it at all. In fact, I was quite unimpressed with the picture quality - I think the original master tapes of this episode must be damaged. The brightness kept changing dramatically, even within scenes. There were dark fringes in places where they didn’t belong.

I hope some of the other masters are in better condition.
