Balance of Terror Re-mastered (9/17)

The Re-mastered version of Balance of Terror is on tonight. Can’t wait to see the Romulan Warbird. Though I thought the Enterprise would look like the Defiant did on Enterprise, but it doesn’t. Oh and Spock’s make-up is really noticable.

Hmmm…you don’t really seem that upset about it. Did you mean to post this in the Pit?

Crap! Would a mod please be so kind as to move this to Cafe Society.

OK.

Is it just me or do Spock and the Romulans look like they’re wear womens’ makeup?

Oh no! This was on my TV, and I didn’t pay any attention because I didn’t realize it was special. Shoot, I looked at my program guide, saw “Balance of Terror,” and thought, why does this sound familiar?? I didn’t remember I’d been staring at this thread title all day. Poop.

What I did see didn’t look particularly different, though. Nothing caught my eye as spiffier than normal.

Really? I thought it looked FABULOUS! but without cable I’ve only seen the series on a B&W TV back during its first run and various worn out prints viewed on crappy TVs with marginal reception. It was like seeing it new.

And Sweet Zombie Jesus, was that thing on Yeoman Rand’s head the most complex do you’ve ever seen on a white woman? FLAT PLAITS?!?!? Looked like an effing beehive.

WBNX, Channel 55, is the Cleveland station carrying the remastered episodes. They showed “Balance of Terror” last night at midnight and… again at 2pm today. Jeez, run another show, wouldya? I’m hoping they’ll air “Amok Time” and “Court Martial” and “City on the Edge of Forever” soon. It’s high time I introduced my 9-year-old son to the show. He’s ready.

Other than the new shots of the Enterprise it didn’t look any different.

I guess I was spoiled growing up watching the reruns on color TV. i’ve long admired the architecture of yeoman Rand’s hair, and i’ve always thought Spock wore too much eye shadow.

GRRR! I had to go to the Star Trek web site, find the call letters of which station in Minneapolis was showing it, look up in the phone book which number on the dial that is (45), and then find out I missed the once-a-week no-repeats showing on Saturday.

At least you got the whole episode. Our Fox affiliate had it scheduled for right after the Red Sox-Yankees game, which ran long, and then they went to an infomercial to fill out the time until the bottom of the hour, when they joined it in progress.

Proving once again that Fox hates science fiction programming. :frowning:

They don’t have another one to run. The next remastered episode will be available to the syndication affiliates next weekend.

In the opening credits, “whooshing” sound effect as the Enterprise flies repeatedy by was quite noticable in the remastered version.

:dubious:
Hey!
Are we being whoosed!?

I watched it last night, and I was surprised how subtle the CGI was. They kept the look and feel of the original series exactly - so much so that there were a few space scenes where you had to look carefully to notice it wasn’t the original effects. They even kept the original, somewhat strange motion of the ships (due to the orignals being models on wires). And the ships weren’t exactly radically different. I knew the Enterprise was an exact reproduction from the original model plans, but even the Romulan ship looked pretty much identical. They didn’t add any extra little animated features or anything. And they didn’t take the opportunity to make the Romulan’s energy weapon look more cool - it was still the same glowing blob thing as in the original series, just cleaned up a bit. And they didn’t add any extra shots of the spaceships being damaged by explosions, or to show damage in CGI after the fact - just the same old, “Hey it’s the same model, only tilted 30 degrees to show the ship is drifting” effect. I was kind of hoping they’d spiff up the space battles and actually show phasers doing damage. But nope.

Oh, they also didn’t fix the continuity error in the episode - the ‘phasers’ were still photon torpedoes. Of course, they kind of had to be torpedoes to fit in with the whole, "Run silent - run deep’ theme.

I suspect the whole reason for doing this wasn’t to make the show look spiffier or more modern, but simply because the model-based effects in the original were too crude for an HD remaster. It probably became apparent that the effects looked totally fake in higher resolution, so they used CGI to redo them as exactly as possible.

I am strangely comforted by your description. I was afraid they were going to do a George Lucasian style insertion of upadated FX in the old episodes and the contrast would have been jarring. I might actually buy a couple of these re-mastered episodes now.

I’m terrified that they would retrofit

KLINGONS!!

Was the Enterprise’s weapon fire a different color then waht was originally? It looked different that waht I rememeber, but it has been years since I’ve seen it.
