Balkanize the US - anyone remember Panarin?

For some reason, I thought of Igor Panarin a few minutes ago. I don’t recall him being taken seriously in the US (except by certain flavors of doomers). I’m told he was a bit popular in Russia, but I’ve no idea if that’s true, or if it was in an Alex Jones sort of way or what.

Anyway, he predicted the US would collapse in 2010 and form several new zones allied to or controlled by different countries (another map link). Now, what I remember most about US Internet comments when it happened was people complaining about how the lines were draw, that there was no “Neo-Confederacy” section, Texas was still pissed about the Alamo so no way, etc.

So, for the sake of my entertainment, post your own ideas of how the US could be split up in the near future and reasons for each grouping. Maybe even give a cause for the split (could effect way states split). Obviously “not gonna happen” is a very reasonable response, but it’s not in the spirit of the thread.

His map was pretty ignorant of American geography, culture and regions.

All in all, I don’t think any splits would necessarily follow existing state lines either. I could see the Republic of Minnesota gaining the eastern halves of North and South Dakota (to the Missouri) and part of western Wisconsin. Although it would be interesting where Omaha ends up.

I’m sure some well meaning westerners would insist that their states ‘go it alone’, but realistically, Wyoming isn’t going to proper as a nation-state. Utah might, just on the strength of Mormon numbers, and they may decide to ‘annex’ parts of surrounding states with higher mormon populations.

What on earth does Mississippi have in common with New Mexico?

Beats me. And without much to go on, it surprises me to see Tennessee with the European Union and Georgia with Mexico (which again bring up the issue that there is not reason every new country formed would be strongly allied/under the control of an existing governmental group).

That’s why I invited everyone to form their own map. At this point in time I don’t see all that California Republic as one nation, and not part of China. Maybe split California, if doable, with more of the interior with Nevada and Utah?

Of course, even now we have a nation of states that have some vast differences. And geography matters - difficult for California and NY to be part of the same county if they have two more countries between them on the map. And those blue cities surrounded by red states are another issue.

Agree, depending on what cause/method of separate is used. I mean violent revolution, exterior attack, natural disaster, or putting secession (or forming a new country with other states) on the ballot?

Really, his map was just a Stalinist wet-dream: break up the US and have each portion ruled by different foreign powers.

There’s not much more to it than that.

I too look forward to the neo-Canadian imperium.

Given the population of those states, who’s really getting taken over?

The red and blue portions of our new protectorate will be so busy fighting each other that they will welcome our calm reasonableness. :stuck_out_tongue:

Are you saying that the ex-expatriate Confederates who went to Mexico after the war were preparing the way?

Plus, Minnesotans will welcome finally being in a country where they can participate in competitive curling.

Yeah, it’s not like minority rule ever happened.

My income tax is going down!

I’m going to get universal health care!

I’d like to see California, Oregon, Washington and probably Hawaii join British Columbia and maybe Baja California in a new nation. Face it, we’d have a Top 10 economy and easy interaction with the rest of the Pacific Rim.

It’s kind of funny that a guy that lived in a country that imploded would predict that America would do the same thing.

And how exactly is it that America is supposed to implode, yet Canada does fine, Mexico does fine, the EU does fine, and China does fine?

America isn’t going to implode without causing massive economic dislocation all over the world. And why exactly is China supposed to take over the West Coast, but they can’t take over the midwest? Like, they’re not invading, right? They’re just picking up the pieces of the collapsed American empire, right? It’s not like they’re right there with armored divisions and marines ready to cross the border. So why exactly is the South taken over by Mexico? Why doesn’t China take over the whole thing, if China is such a rising superpower that will be completely unaffected by the implosion of the global economy? That extra 100 kilometers after crossing the whole Pacific Ocean is so difficult!

It’s pretty much “Waaah, my country failed! I bet America will fail too! But worse!”

Maybe new England to unite with “olde” England and then have a Brexit?

Alaska going to Russia is the biggest joke on that map. The Russians can’t handle Siberia. How the hell can they handle Alaska, and Alaskans? For that matter, why in the world would Mexico have anything to do with Arkansas?

They have good drugs in Russia, that’s for sure!

Sure, but it’s hardly just a matter of # of people. Military and prior political/social norms factor in, too. More difficult to work with economy sizes, since if the US goes, who the hell knows what’s going on world wide with that.

Nonetheless, I was going with the idea the area actually being part of Canada (one of the options listed). With citizenship and votes.

Canada’s so polite - would they really turn all those Central-North-Americans into a conquered people with no rights?

Due to a boarder argument with Texas, a tiny part of Arkansas supposedly once belonged to Mexico.
